Ive also essentially stumbled on all of these myself in the first few playthroughs of the game, and im starting to think i might change the rules a bit to make the game a bit more challenging. I think i might try the following: 1. Always have the 4 rooms discovered at the start and the torch 1 down the track before the 1st person does anything. I believe this is objectively the best move and for new players to not realise it probably just makes it a bit frustrating for the experienced players if the new players do anything else. 2. When you then go to place rooms 5 to X (depending on how many corridors appeared on the first 4 rooms) then take that many rooms + 3, shuffle them, and then place them out and out the remaining ones back on top of the rooms deck. That way you can't count the rooms to know which ones are/arent minions already, so it will make you feel like you have to explore in multiple directions. Because let's face it, if youve won 15 games in a row, that means the game is too easy as it stands currently, so making you have to explore in multiple directions both increases that difficulty and also increases the immersion of the theme (since if you were actually delving deep into a dungeon you wouldnt know that the minions + boss were in direction A just because you were moving to direction A). 3. Forcing you to enter the boss's lair at least once and attack it before luring it away. In my second time playing the game i used the "Enter The Boss's Lair" free action to initiate the boss, but I never moved my hero into the boss' lair (since if you read the rules closely you dont have to do that, and in some cases you wont even be able to if your movement speed was used up getting to the lair door card). So i then just immediately taunted the boss to bring them out of the lair and then used the horn to move them around the map to the altars. I then just killed them in the middle of the map rather than ever stepping foot in the boss's lair. Which feels like a bit of a weird flavour fail to me, if i went into a dungeon, opened the door and then immediately started calling the boss profanities from outside the door rather than ever going inside to face them haha 😅
@BoardGameOfficer
@BoardGameOfficer 19 күн бұрын
Oh i like second idea, so randomize the rest of the dungeon to make it a little more like you are actually exploring than just building a dungeon to how to like it! haha yes I like the idea that you have to attack the boss at least once. Because I do the exact last thing I just open the door and then run away and taunt him! I hardly ever actually go into the dungeon. Which is really lack luster when it comes to the lore and the extra abilities while in the dungeon.

@@BoardGameOfficer yeah I'm going to try it out a few times this week and see if I find it more fun and just challenging enough (don't want it toooo challenging either haha 😅). Yeah, I actually found the design of the altar system curious at first because while I understood that it added a bit more complexity to the game it definitely seemed off-theme haha (as far as I'm aware most dungeon crawler/RPGs have you face off with the bosses in their lair rather than taunting them and having them chase you around the rest of the dungeon 😅 ). Thanks again for the videos though, I definitely found them useful :)

I've only played 5 or so games, 4 of which have been solo eith me controlling 2 heroes, so very limited playtime, but ive won 3 out of those 5 times (all 3 were solo), so i dont think its too hard considering I'm still new. But i agree with everything you said, you can get unlucky in a number of ways and that can screw you over if you have a run of bad luck. I think i also agree with you in regards to it being hard with new players, BUT I'd say that's not really an issue. You probably want to lose the first match with new players so you can back with a vengeance and beat it. If you win every time it's not really much fun right? I think the two main problems I've found with the design are: 1. The item draws really make or break things, if you pull a few melee items in a row when you really need intellect stuff (or vice versa) it can be punishing. Particularly with the legendary sets, having 2+ items of a set is a HUGE advantage compared to getting a bunch of random unhelpful loot. One game i breezed through because i had 3 of a set on one hero, while another game i really struggled because i went through a bunch of the spell deck without finding damaging spells (i just kept getting things like invisible, scry, eagles swiftness etc.) and without getting intellect gear (so my intellect hero was pretty useless). I dont have the expansions but i agree that they would make it harder to get what you want/need unless you take stuff out. 2. The best way to win is to sort of game the location draws a bit; i.e. start by revealing the 4 opening locations around the entrance, that will likely bring out a bunch more unrevealed locations. As your placing these ones down then you count out how many have been placed, you know the first 9 (in a 2 player game) isnt the minion tiles, so you can sort of ignore them if you want, and then you can explore in one direction so you know all the minion tiles will be in that direction (which also helps with the altar locations for when you get the boss). While this is optimal, i feel it's probably not in the spirit of the game, so maybe if youre finding it too easy (which it sounds like you are if you win 90+% of the time) then perhaps its best to count how many tiles you will need to place out, and rhen take a few more and shuffle those up, and then deal out, that way it's not guaranteed to have the minions be in a particular direction. To help with the alpha gamer problem id give a few suggestions: 1. Just let them do what they want and be willing to lose if you think it will make the game more fun for the new player. Maybe give them a hint every second turn or something so youre not constantly telling them what to do but theyre not totally screwing the team. 2. Maybe give some loot at the start to the newbie players; e.g. get them to draw 3 loot cards and pick 1 for each new person to start with, put the others in the discard pile. This way the new people get a leg up, which means you dont need to give them advice anymore since their incompetence is somewhat counterbalanced by the extra loot and by the fact you have some loot in the discard already which means you are getting better selection when you get loot. 3. If you have a 4 player game with 1-2 new persons you could just not make the torch go down on the new players turns if you think that's necessary. 4. Change the dice focus rule so you can get focus from unused dice before AND after performing the actions (e.g. if you Elemental Charge and have full focus, if you roll a 5, 3, and 3, then let them spend the 2 focus for the Elemental Charge and then get the two focus from the 3s back... Whereas usually you wouldnt be allowed to do this. Maybe just apply this to the new players.
@BoardGameOfficer
@BoardGameOfficer 19 күн бұрын
Ya the item draw can be really random and can be difficult. But ya that is basically exactly what i go through on my tips and tricks video for revealing the 4 rooms at the beginning and then counting the cards to build the dungeon. I like those suggestions for getting rid of the alpha gamer mind set. Those can really help with the new players!

For your "successful spell" rule, does "cast a spell" mean "successfully cast a spell"? Specifically for the Phoenix legendary set it says whenever you cast a spell add focus depending on how many items of the set you have. Do i get that focus: A. When i attempt to cast the spell (regardless of success or failure) B. When I pass the intellect check (regardless of whether i then pay the focus for the spell; e.g. for Fireball if i pass the 7 intellect required, but dont pay the 6 focus). C. When i cast a successful spell i.e. i pass the intellect check AND pay the focus for the spell. ?
@BoardGameOfficer
@BoardGameOfficer 19 күн бұрын
So the successful spell rule is just if there is a 'green check mark' on the ability. So as for the item set, it is as soon as you attempt to cast the spell that you gain the extra focus. So option A. So you CAN use that focus to change to dice to make it successfull. I hope that makes sense.

One thing on your video i sort of disagree with (and i know that the Dized app says the same as what you says, but i disagree with it too) is about enemies stopping your movement when they enter your room. I agree with what you said in terms of if you use the warhorn to bring an enemy into your room, or past you, it doesnt "end your movement", i.e. you can theoretically move later on this turn (whereas if you walk into an enemy my movement has ended for the turn, even if i then use the warhorn i can no longer move this turn). BUT based on the rulebook i think that you CANNOT move past an enemy if theyre in your room (i.e. you cannot leave the room), even though your movement hasnt ended. The rulebook says "When moving into a room with an enemy, you cannot move any farther this turn. Heroes cannot 'pass through' enemies unless they have the Stealth ability.", so the first sentence is what we covered above in terms of the warhorn, but the second sentence is more or less saying that even if your movement hasnt ended, you cant move past that enemy to leave the room anyway. The Dized faq seems to also say you can leave the room, but again, i feel like this is a mistake. Based on the rulebook, I think you first need to use some ability like the warhorn to move the enemies off your square, and then you can use your movement . I guess it depends on the definition of 'pass through', but in my mind if an enemy is on your space then you are having to 'pass through' them to leave that space, which the game says you cannot do; but i guess if you dont consider leaving a space with an enemy to be passing through that enemy then what you/dized said is correct.
@BoardGameOfficer
@BoardGameOfficer 19 күн бұрын
Yes, i understand that the rulebook does make it sound like that with that wording. The official TED FAQ also states that same thing as the Dized app does and so that is where I got that from. @@BoardGameOfficeroh okay, if the official faq says it too then i guess I'll concede I'm wrong. But it does seem odd to me flavour wise that I can escape from enemies when they're next to me fighting me, but not when I willingly and intentionally move towards and engage them haha. I guess I'll have to play a few more games with each way of playing it to see if my way limits options too much or if the other way is too easy, and then decide from there if I should use my rule or not. Thanks for the help clarifying and for tracking everything down for us! :)

Very useful video, I've now played about 4 games of this, and while im still enjoying the game, the rule book is easily one of the worst I've ever read/used. So many things wrong with the rulebook: 1. Needing to use an appendix, that's not included with the game box, to understand the basic rules/iconography is terrible. 2. Even with the appendix you need to look up the FAQ and Board Game Geek comments from the creator to still clarify some rules. 3. The rules that are there are written in such a way you constantly need to jump back and forth to find important information that should be next to each other. 4. This one is insane: there are MULTIPLE incorrect text descriptions in the appendix! E.g. the Pulley room and Library room dont have skill checks, but the appendix card mentions skill checks. The Giant's Strength text is what the text for Elemental Charge should be, the Elemental Charge text is talking about a card not in the base game i think, the set of the Lion equipment talks about adding to melee attack dice rolls when clearly the iconography is saying you should heal X health when performing a melee attack etc. etc. . There are so many errors its crazy, they obviously didnt proof read it properly. So as such, a video like this is SO useful for this game! Thanks so much! I've mostly tried to dig around for some of this info before finding this video, but I either had to house rule it or guess in some cases. Thanks again :)

While stealth says you ignore enemies for movement, I have still been resolving the goblin reveal tiles (ambush) as they have specific wording that I thought meant it superceded stealth. You can even solo this easily which is how I mostly play. It also has some of the best theme and lore/storytelling. The nice thing is it's also very amenable to customization and even making up your own stories, heroes and enemies, which I've done. you have basically two options to get started.… Buy one of the western core sets (City of ancients or swamp of death) or you could buy the eastern core set (forbidden fortress.) you might also want to buy a couple of extra enemies just because after a while the enemies that come in the core set start feeling a little redundant. This guy named Daniel has a channel called the dungeon dive. Fantastic channel by the way! I think you'll see a lot of familiar stuff there. Anyway he is definitely got what is probably the best series on shadows of brimstone. And he starts off with a short video about how to get started. Which is one of the videos that I watched before I made my first purchase. His advice on what to get next and then after that etc. has been spot on. I feel like it's really offered a great guide on adding content in a way that evolves the SOB universe in a conservative and targeted way. Here is a link to that playlist. Obviously it's quite a few videos but I would just suggest watching the first one and the second just to see if it's something you want to get into… kzfaq.info/sun/PLKewgRd8Eir9YKPPCrOy9KzRJ270BlMj2&si=uzQrh9rgqFORghuY

Tiny epic Dungeons is the main game we grab when we travel. Lots of fun easy to play in a cafe or hotel room and easy enough to teach to people we meet travelling. My absolute favorite Dungeon Crawler is Star Wars Imperial Assault. The time pressure makes every mission really tense and the use of a simple roll of a few dice to handle relative accuracy of weapons, damage potential and special weapon effects or character abilities is brilliant.

Ya its so nice to have a dungeon crawler in such a small box!! I haven’t tried imperial assault yet, but I have heard that it is o e of the best Star Wars games! I will have to try that one soon!!

Thanks for the video, It Is very interesting for me. But i have a question, If I am casting a spell, but fail to cast it, will the enemies then counterattack me? Or i Lost only the hero action? Thanks you very much for tour time

Yes, the enemy will counter attack you even with a failed spell. The only 2 exceptions are the rogue elf’s shadow walk and the spell elemental charge.

I have some house rules I find pretty enjoyable but they don't particularly make the game easier: When you enter a trap room and would have to make a skill check of your choice, treat it like it would require the same skill as for its respective disarm action. You may subtract -1 from the required amount if the active hero comes with only two hero dice (default, not counting loot) and -3 for only one hero die. This way traps become more individual, and dangerous and a disarm action makes more sense. I have found myself walking over the traps on purpose to power up my resources when doing the successful skill check. When a hero is in a room with an enemy you may move through it like you would have stealth. Same as with the original rule when a hero is allowed to search if another one is distracting the enemy. When goblins are added to the entrance room get -1 health similar to getting ambushed. Therefore also the potion's teleport peril makes more sense. And speaking of potions, now you are allowed to drink them anytime (also while doing an action) as a "free action", the same way as the modify a die "free action". Cheers :)

Chronicles of Drunagor is my current #1 as well, it has everything I was looking for in a solo/co-op dungeon crawler topped off with tons of variety /replayability and great production quality. The action cube system is brilliant and keeps the core gameplay loop interesting even after dozens of hours in a campaign. Not sure why Drunagor doesn’t seem to get as much love as other dungeon crawlers across the hobby.. maybe it is due to availability, cost, or just the sheer size of it all. But I went all-in on it and don’t have any regrets, and now I am looking forward to Dante and whatever else CGS puts out in the future.

Ya I really enjoy the action cube and as I said in the video, the characters and how all of them are so different! Ya, also i know a lot of people hate on it because it is on the easier side. But I am so much fun with it that I am not too worried about that! Ya I am excited for Dante! I am just very impressed with CGS and will probably back just about anything they make! haha

Nice list we have a bunch on common, Drunagore is one of my all time faves, my group played the entire core and both expansions. We’re wrapping up oathsworne and some others before we kick off apocalypse. Unfortunately we didn’t finish Middara, the story was a bit much to cram in a game night. I still think it’s an amazing game. I’ve never seen such unique mechanics work in a game.

Nice! I haven't made it to Oathsworn yet, but I think that one wil be high on my list once I get to it! Ya, with Middara we started making sure we listened to the story before game night so we could just jump into the game! haha
