Interesting justaxposition of old & new Fall River scenes. Old enough (70) to remember the old granite City Hall being demolished to make way for the cunstuction of I-195; the thudding of pile drivers building the foundations in the Taunton River for the Braga Bridge, then walking over it as shown in one of the photos with my parents & younger brother when it was opened to the public before being opened to traffic. Well remember the disaster that was thhe Notre Dame fire that levelled a good chunk of the Flint neighborhood. I set up & operated an emergency amateur radio station handling communications for the Red Cross for that; I'm still an active ham radio operator & still have an appreciation certificate from the Red Cross for that still hanging on the wall in my radio room. The photos of Fall River's original granite railroad station were nice; interestingly, the new MBTA commuter rail station is just on the opposite side of the track from the original station's location (now the small retail plaza occupied by Auto Zone & few other businesses). Something else to look for in old Fall River photos; prior to the constuction of I-195 through the heart of the city (when they buried the Quequechan RIver in a concrete culvert!), there was at least one large, visible waterfall just west of where the nondescreipt brick gatehouse (noticable by 4 pipes sticking up through the roof) that controls the flow of the river is located, roughly just west of where Fourth St. crosses I-195. The river originally flowed perpendicular to I-195 & ducked underground again, passing beneath the brick building across Third St. from the Post Office. About a foot away from the southeastern corner of that building, there was a low concrete wall; if you looked behind it, you could see the river flowing below. I don't know if it's since been closed up, but years ago I remember looking behind it & seeing the now bone-dry riverbed below it. ;)

I still remember the little sign on the old city hall about spitting on the sidewalk being subject to a fine so as dumb a$$ 10 yr olds, we’d always break that law, probably after catching a Saturday matinee at the Empire theater.

My 3rd great grandfather and his family l came from England in 1877 and moved to fall river and worked and supervised the bleachery mill over there
@jsmctch3 жыл бұрын
There good fishing in the pond behind that Mill. Fished there all my youth... The area is closed off now. But if you go straight instead of right to the Bleachery, you end up at Dave's beach on the South Wattupa pond
