Thanks for watching! I have to admit I'm not sure what parts of Skara are considered the upper Skara. I did visit the central parts and "fornbyn" a while back in this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e7xpdJmny9mRoKM.html but there certainly are more places worth visiting in Skara.

Thanks for the tour of the Alvastra monastery. Very impressed by the construction, must have been something special in its prime! I like the fact that they had kept so much of the outlines of the buildings so one can really get an good feel for the general layout. Nice also to see the farmer there in the background with the tractor, life must go on also with more mundane things. :)

Västervik is one of my favourite cities in Sweden! I have family coming from Västervik so I spent quite a lot of time, especially in summertime in Västervik when i was a kid. It feels very familiar to me, almost like home actually. So I really enjoyed seeing all these sights that you shared, it brings a lot of good memories for me. I go to Västervik still almost every year or every second at least I wish you had stayed longer but I know that you mentioned it was more of a quick stop! I think the area at 05:30 is really beautiful, all those old wooden houses in different colors. Västervik has managed to keep quite a lot of the old buildings which is nice. I can tell you that it is very popular to drink coffee and eat våfflor at Båtmannstugorna in the summertime. Another area that I think is very scenic and nice is where you end the video, out on the other side of the bay where you can see the city on both sides. Very pittoresque especially in summer. Too bad there was a lot of kids at Stegeholm castleruin, but to be honest it is not that much left to see anyway. It is mostly famous nowadays for the Visfestival in the summer, where they use that ruin as a concertvenue. It can be very nice in the evening there with water on both sides! Another thing, you mentioned Björn Ulvaeus, he (or at least one of his companies) has actually built/financed the hotel/apartment complex you can see at 26:17 (straight ahead). That building replaced an old restaurant that used to be on that spot that was a bit worn down. A lot of controversy around building something at that area since it is very close to the ruin and all, but I think in the end it turned out quite nice! Finally for those who to think about going to Västervik, for you info, there is a really nice archipelago outside Västervik so it is a very popular place for people with boat to visit. Thanks!

Thank you for watching and for all the added information! It really was a very nice city, I can certainly imagine the cafe at "Båtmanstugorna" being a great place for some waffles. Doing these quick stops on our road trips is a great way to get more content for my channel but I have to admit it also means that I don't quite get the time to really appreciate the cities and what they have to offer. But I guess I'll see it as scouting out places where I can make longer stop at for future trips :)

Such a beautiful summer day! Impressive with graves that in some cases are over 1000 years old, crazy when you think of it! I agree with you on the observation that it is not always easy to pick up what it a graveformation and what is just ordinary rocks considering the amount of rocks in that area.

Thanks for the tour of Oskarshamn! Oskarshamn is a bit of a mystery to me, because in my childhood I spent a lot of time on the east coast of Småland and I have passed Oskarshamn on the highway so many times but still the town feels very unfamiliar to me. I have taken the ferry from Oskarshamn to Gotland in my childhood and I think I did some sports in Oskarshamn one weekend but otherwise I have no recollection of being in the city centre or anything. It looks quite nice though, the areas of Besväret and Fnyket looks so pittoresque. I am not sure why we generelly enjoy that type of areas more, maybe they are more suitable for the human condition or maybe it is more due to nostaliga, perhaps a combination of both! The little square looks nice, the building with Svenska Handelsbanken looks like a small castle, that is the way a bank should look! The big square is apart from one beautiful hotel and a few other nice buildings just depressing with all those 1960-type shoeboxes. Apparently they tore down an old hotel there in the 60s, I am sure it was a lot nicer building that what they replaced it with. I did not know Axel Munthe was from Oskarshamn. The church is beautiful and the whole open area around the church with that park looks really nice. The town does not seem too crowded with people, at least the day your were there! Finally, it can't be a coincidence that you talk about Queen Victoria at 03:42 and at the same time we see Pizzeria Viktoria in the background. :)
@MiddleAgedSwedeGoesForAWalk
@MiddleAgedSwedeGoesForAWalk Ай бұрын
Thanks! It's a really good question why we like those areas. I guess nostalgia plays a big part, I feel like a lot of old Swedish movies and tv-shows have all romanticized the idea of living in a small wooden house (or summer cottage) surrounded by nature and I think these areas matches that as well (even if the nature here is only well grown gardens). The Victoria thing really was a coincidence and I didn't even think about it until you mentioned it now :)
@Erikslust
@Erikslust Ай бұрын
@@MiddleAgedSwedeGoesForAWalk Yeah, it is probably a big portion of nostalgia primarily. I definately agree that the long sofa is more of a bench. The odd thing with that thing is that it was built already in 1867 and still so long. I mean, if a city today would decide to do like an abnormally long bench or sofa, they would probably do it also for the fun of it, it could become a tourist attraction or talking point to profile the city.. But in 1867, did they really consider such things? I have a feeling they did not so just building such a long sofa/bench just for its functionality is kind of funny when you think of it.
@MiddleAgedSwedeGoesForAWalk
@MiddleAgedSwedeGoesForAWalk Ай бұрын
@@Erikslust Yeah, I fully agree, 1867 seems very early to build big/weird things just for the publicity or any other reason than to actual function as a bench/sofa.

Thanks for the tour of Karlskrona! I think Karlskrona is a real gem among swedish cities. Granted, I grew up reasoanbly close to Karlskrona so I have been there many times. I have not been to all other cities in Sweden, but still I would say that Karlskrona is really nice and very underrated. The choice to found a city on the Island of Trossö and later on the surrounding islands has created a really special scenery, it is like Stockholm in a way with lots of water and different islands, albeit of course a lot smaller and more limited scale. The fact that one can still feel that strong presence of shipbuilding/military in the city is great and all the historical buildnings from several hundred years back gives a unique atmosphere in my view. I think that Stortorget is the biggest stone-clad square in northern Europe (now how that is defined...). I think it is interesting that they built two so big churches (Trefaldighetskyrkan, and Fredrikskyrkan) so close to eachother both in location and in time. Also they already had a church (Amiralitetskyrkan) in place. They sure felt a big demand for churches at that time! The area of Stumholmen is very beautiful with all the surrounding water I think and I really recommend the Marine Museum situated there. Another thing that I would recommend to visitors is to take a trip in the archipelago. There are boats that go (from Fisktorget I think) on a route to 5-6 different islands/places in the archipelago. Then you can select at each stop if you want embark and if you do you can just catch a later boat to bring you to the next island/place. It is really nice and gives a really pleasant experience of life and surroundings in the archipelago.
@MiddleAgedSwedeGoesForAWalk
@MiddleAgedSwedeGoesForAWalk Ай бұрын
Thanks! Yeah, Karlskrona was a really nice city. Speaking of Amiralitetskyrkan, I really wanted to visit it (and Rosenbom), sadly it was in the area where I didn't really dare walk around with a camera, and that seems to have been a good choice. As far as I can tell, "Sjöstridsskolan" right next to it seems to be one of those protected places which you're not allowed to take photos or videos of. I will have to give the boats a try next time I visit Karlskrona.
@Erikslust
@Erikslust Ай бұрын
@@MiddleAgedSwedeGoesForAWalk Yeah, that area is closer to the current active military installations. To be honest, I have been there but never really thought about the photo limitations but of course if one wants to film that is a factor to consider! Karlskrona has a lot of very nice views to the water on the different islands. For people who have a small boat and like to spend time on the water it is perfect city.

Thanks for the tour and info provided! I have been to Ronneby Brunnspark some years back but at time I think I only covered a very limited area of the park. It is really a big area with lots to see. I really like the fact that they have managed to keep some of the old buildings and kept them wellrenovated as well. Such beautiful scenery with that trail with pine trees and water around, makes for a really peaceful environment. I enjoyed seeing that lady in the beginning sitting down on one of the benches and probably just enjoying the beautiful day. You see so many park benches everywhere in cities but most often they are not used, so good to see that people use them as well. Then regarding water and wells, I am no expert but I guess some water is more healthy (to drink) than others, but is there really such a huge health impact? And to bathe in specific water for health effect, that sounds a bit odd to me. But whatever, as long as it makes people feel better. :)

Thanks for watching! I don't really know anything about medical stuff, but since the water had high concentrations of ferrous sulfate which is a type of iron, I guess maybe people with iron deficiency might have seen noticeable improvements if they drank the water regularly? Other than that, I would imagine there was a lot of superstition involved.

Thanks for the tour of Ronneby, what a beautiful day! I really like the Kulturkvarteren area, I mean, that view for example at 5:46 is marvellous, those old houses with different colors. That is how it should look. Unfortunately I think they tore down a lot of nice buildings in Ronneby during the 60s and 70s. I remember from the quite famous documentary "När Domus kom till stan" by Anders Wahlgren (sometimes it can be found on svt play öppet arkiv), they talk about that a lot of houses and beautiful structures that were tore down to make way for shopping malls. I think I even recognize from that documentary the Willys building at 17:35 and the Diamanten shoebox at 18:50, I bet one of those were the Domus building and the other most likely was EPA or something similar. Just crazy with those big boxes of buildings. I have been to Ronneby quite a few times and I think it has some very nice areas and buildings. The fact that they have the Ronneby Å (Ronneby River) running through the city makes for some quite nice scenery as well. Also I think the city has some good general spacy composition and very open in the layout, I like that.

These islands of Tjurkö and Sturkö are quite interesting. I had one teacher in "grundskolan" who had a summer cottage on one of the islands ( I guess it was Tjurkö) and we went there with the whole class one time. At that time the whole area was kind of a military security area so no foreigners (non-Swedish citizens basically) were allowed to go there. So there has been lots of military presence on these islands before (and maybe still is).
@MiddleAgedSwedeGoesForAWalk
@MiddleAgedSwedeGoesForAWalk 2 ай бұрын
Thanks! We only drove far enough onto the Tjurkö island to reach the redoubt and so far we didn't see any military but there does seem to be some exercise areas for the military further in on the island and the Kungsholm Fort on an island just west of Tjurkö is still used by the Swedish military.

Not always easy to know which stones are the historical ones but I think you made a good effort! Very impressed that you managed to caption whatever was on the rune stone. :) I think that little shed in the end had some really good info and also kind of a map where stuff was marked out, at least that helps.

Thanks for the tour of Karlshamn, I really enjoyed the scenery and the information provided! I think it is a bit funny that Karl X "founded" Karlshamn in 1660 and then his son Karl XI only like 15-20 years later think "no this town will not do, we need a new one" and create Karlskrona only like 60-70 km to the east. :) Considering that Karlshamn was burned down and wrecked a few times from invaders it seems Karl XI had a point though, maybe it was not possible to protect enough. Looking from above on a Karlshamn map on the city centre, it is interesting to see that renaissance style street pattern with everything at 90 degree angle and square pattern. Typical Erik Dahlbergh style at that time in history. It is nice that they have kept so much old houses and wooden houses in the city. One thing that is a bit odd is when you pass Karlshamn by train, the train station is kind of in the north part of Karlshamn and gives (at least me) the impression that it is a relatively small city eventhough as we can see in the video, the city stretches out quite nice.
@MiddleAgedSwedeGoesForAWalk
@MiddleAgedSwedeGoesForAWalk 2 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching! I have not really seen any specific information on why Karl XI created Karlskrona rather than fortify Karlshamn. As you mentioned, Karlshamn had the Danish occupying it a few times so maybe it was considered difficult to defend, or maybe they thought it was better to have multiple naval ports, or maybe he just really wanted to create a town of his own? :)
