The Portuguese Gambit is also a variation of the Scandinavian Defense which occurs after 1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Nf6 3.d4 Bg4 . It's better than the one with Bb5 you guys listed as garbage.

Another idea behind a6 is that Qb3 does not work because black can now play Na5, which wouldn’t be possible without a6 because of Qb5+.
@rickdudesterman2 күн бұрын
I was very surprised that you have the Scottish opening above the Italian/Giuoco Piano. Isn't the former usually avoided by top GMs while the latter is played very frequently?

Regarding the volume levels in the Caro-Kann course, I had always assumed you were trying to get us used to the idea that, to win as Black, you have to create imbalances.

Good teaching! I suggest you fine tune the volume of the presenters...I keep turning down the volume for one and turning it up for the other speaker, a little bit annoying. Keep the Caro videos coming and maybe show us some actual games.

This might be an unpopular opinion but that guy deserves an award for being able to pull off such a brazen tactic of cheating. Obviously disgusting thing to do to the other players he hurt with his actions, but it just shows how low the bar is for cheating that this went on for over a year.

Great podcast, enjoyed the show. Just one detail. Hikaru has actually attempted to play the Bong Cloud in TT against Kramnik. Hikaru got completely smoked. I agree with the sentiment and the over arching point though. Kramnik would be embarrassed if that match happened.
@teegees20 күн бұрын
Brilliant. Have you tried to feed the data to an LLM and see if it can extract any approximate conversion formulas based on rating ranges? For example for ratings 0-500 use conversion formula X, for ratings 500-1000 use conversion formula Y, etc

I'm not even American and I'll be mad if these people don't get their rating points back. It's non negotiable
@fearlv1rattata12 күн бұрын
I don't think they will. They didn't even give full refunds to the people in the Chicago tournament who played the cheater in previous rounds. They were only given 0.5 pts back while the person who was playing him when he got caught got a full 1 pt. The rules are stupid.
@vasanthsarathy847622 күн бұрын
I really like this. Thank you Matt! Why is the Bishop on e3 bad for white, material-wise? It has an open diagonal pointing at the weakened kingside, no? Also, it controls the dark squares which the opponent can't really defend because black has no dark-sq bishop. Is this more of a mobility issue? Also, with the Rook/files eval, it seems like the black rook can't really to the c-file because there is a blocked-bishop, whereas white can get to it more easily. Just visually it feels like white rooks can move around more easily. Also, a related question: when evaluating it seems like you are both thinking about the next move (e.g, Nb6). I agree that would be a great move, but that would then be an evaluation of the **next** position, no? It's likely that I am totally missing something, would love to hear thoughts.

why is this cheater anonymous?

Stan Halstead. There is an old reddit post naming him as well as the chicago u2100 results being online. You can see who "Stan" is pretty easily from there.

Cheating story at the chicago open aside, is there a reason that the TD's at Continental Chess Association need to be so rude? I've had 5-6 interactions with the TDs, head and assistant, over the years, and none of them have been pleasant. I asked for a bye for round 3 in the U2300, before the first round, and the guy seemed incredibly annoyed I was even speaking with him.
@olivierporte12 күн бұрын
TD’s are sour and bitter because they are mostly people who couldn’t make a living just playing chess - they have to supplement their income with doing TD work, teaching, writing, etc.

We purposely did not expose the cheaters name. But I bet you could find it if you searched the Chicago open crosstables.

I played this guy in the 2023 Chicago Open in the u1500 section. It was my first rated tournament. I lost really soundly but it wasn’t obviously cheating, because you don’t have to play that well to beat me. 😂 Totally didn’t notice him looking down at all, and he actually seemed to be able to make some constructive comments when we talked after the game. This is really wild. He actually went on to win that tournament, and it’s one of the ones that he got some substantial prize money from.

This needs to be a wake up call to the USCF. This guy did not just cheat at some small, local tournament. He did it at big events. The USCF and affiliates need a strong Fair Play policy.
@armgg882921 күн бұрын
They do have a Fair Play policy, but it's only written. They don't follow it. I've read the entire policy, and it even states, 'Players can't go to a different floor other than the playing venue.' This is just insane. None of the tournament directors care about it. They just sit in a different room, pretending to do some paperwork or something. They should go to Europe and see what's the real fair policy is.
