Do u know of any programs in the Pensacola fl area? I’m a disabled vet & new to this area. My 1st SD passed away 1 mo before I moved here, I know it takes around 2 yrs for training so I need help ASAP! I rescued a great dog a yr ago & have been attempting to self train (did 2 separate training courses @ a local pet store for basic training but it was a joke & waste of $). Lately my 21 mo old pup has become fearful of things that never bothered her before (riding in the car, going out in the back yard alone...). The only tigger I can think of is that her “little brother “ (my sister’s dog) passed away a few mo ago from old age. I know she was mourning but after 4 mo, her fear is getting worse. I don’t want to force her to do something she fears, I really luv this pup & hate to give up on her. (I don’t feel like the time & $ is wasted if I have to wash her but I don’t have the luxury of having a lot of time or $ to repeat this process over again). My prayer is that I can find a professional to help me get to the root of the problem & get past it. She is definitely not a happy dog these days (when she sees the leash come out she runs & hides - even if it’s just for a neighborhood walk which she luvs. She loves the dog park but getting her there makes me feel like I’m torturing her! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thx so much for your time!🐾🇺🇸

- Now you need to find a local service dog trainer. There are two main types of places. The first kind is one that does all the training for you and you just have to pay (these can be VERY expensive and they usually involve some sort of fundraising to defer the costs). The second type is community based where you are involved in the training of the dog (they may provide a dog, possbily a rescue, or you may use your own dog if it can do what you need). This kind is much less expensive and has the benefit of you knowing how to train your own dog by the end. www.sd4v.com is an example of this second type in South Carolina. I hope this helps!

@@docsponderings1515 dude, the VA DOES pay for costs associated with training a service dog as well as other costs such as medical, vaccines and things like that.

The VA does not officially sanction use of service dogs, however, some will be willing to write the recommendation. If they write an actual prescription then the VA has to take on all the costs and they won't do that. Honestly, since you can technically train your own service animal, you could do the process without a doctor letter at all. The only time this may be a problem is for housing if they require a doctor's letter. Please let me know if you continue to have problems or questions. I will help however I can.

@@docsponderings1515 For clarification here under the ADA and Fair Housing Act Landlords cannot require a "Doctor's Note" for a service animal. Only for a emotional support animal which is not covered the same under the ADA. If they ask for "paperwork", a "demonstration of the trained task" or inquires about your specific disability or proof there-of they violate the ADA. They may only ask two questions: Is this a service animal? What task is it trained to do? You must be very clear if it is a Service Animal or an Emotional Support Animal. Those two terms are very different under the color of the law. ESA's are not protected under the ADA, Service Animals are.
