Yes, unfortunately. JP passed away from cancer a little over a year ago now.

Thank you very much for sharing some of the techniques of one of my favorite living artists, Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez. Just as a point of record, Mr. Garcia-Lopez doesn't use models; yeah, he's that good.

I finally uploaded these poses, for anyone interested. It would be nice to see some people actually take the effort to try these. You're not going to really get better as an artist until you start drawing from life, so why not get started?

This was very helpful THANK YOU!! So studying gesture is the best way yo learn comic book/sequential art?? Do you practice by drawing gestures from old comic book page panels??
@MichaelPenick2 жыл бұрын
I'm glad this is helpful! Is this the best way to learn how to draw Sequential art? Well no, it's not going to teach you anything about how to tell stories visually, but is it the best way to learn how to draw figures from your head? Absolutely! You just have to practice for hundreds and hundreds of hours, looking at real life and drawing from it so you can build up the necessary knowledge in your head. One way to work on that is to use the poses I share here and do the work along with me. Good luck to you!

This instructor is too unspecific with what he is saying and has a hard time drawing and talking at the same time. Keeps saying “things” those” that’s going to hurt a ton of students
@MichaelPenick2 жыл бұрын
Well I certainly don't want students to get hurt! I didn't realize this was going to be so dangerous! 😉

How do you study other artist to develop your own art style? btw I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL!!!!!! SO MUCH QUALITY INFORMATION IN YOUR VIDEOS LOVE SEEING YOU DRAW SOME OF MY FAVORITE COMIC BOOK ARTIST'S ARTWORK!! CAN YOU DO JORGE JIMENEZ & PEPPE LARRAZ NEXT PLEASE?
@MichaelPenick2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words. I appreciate it. I MIGHT do a few other artists from time to time, but that's not really the point of these videos. Those were just examples to show that the best artists in the business all start with great gesture drawings. If you build your house on a solid foundation, everything you build on top of it will be okay, but if your foundation is garbage, then everything you build on top of it will be garbage. The real work, if you want to be an artist, comes in the form of drawing from life, even if you want to draw bigger than life superheroes. You've got to know the real thing before you can do the bigger than real life thing well. As for developing your own style, I'll tell you what I was taught, which has been proven to me in my own experience over time. Don't worry about style. It will create itself all on its own. The way your brain interprets reality through your arm and hand onto the page IS your style. It evolves as you get more experienced. Here's the catch: we can never see our own style. I don't know why, but we can't. It's kind of like how we can't see our own behavior. Everyone else can see it, but not us. It's the same for our drawing style. We all think we don't have a style, but it's only because we can't see it. Everyone else can though. To them it's clear as day. You just have to trust in this. When you look at other artists you like, you're looking for how they use lines to solve problems. What lines did they choose to draw a nose from this angel or that? We copy them because we like their chosen solutions. Hopefully we take a little bit from lots of different artists so that we don't just become a copy of one particular artist. If you just copy one artist, you'll bury your own unique voice, and while it might get you some attention at first (because the artist you copied has a style everyone likes), in the end you'll only be remembered as the guy who's worked looked like the other guy. I know a lot of artists who are like that. Hopefully, if you start that way, you learn to put the influences away and gain the confidence to let your own voice shine through. Humberto Ramos was an artist who started out as a clone of another artist, but he eventually let his own voice come through and he's been his own thing for a long time now. We all start out looking at the artists that inspire us, but a time comes when we need to put the influences away and trust in our own ability to problem solve. Doing that work on our own is the best possibe way to develop our own style. Hope this helps! PS - IF I do another video where I draw over other artists, Jorge Jimenez would actually be the guy I'd do next. 😊 He brings so much life and energy to his work; it's so much fun to look at, and he's really a cartoonist at heart, which really shines through at times, like when he draws kids.

It’s great to see Olivier Coipel getting the praise he deserves. He gives his characters so much life and energy and vigour.

One hundred percent agree. He's the best of the best, in my opinion. I put him with Adam Hughes and Stuart Immonen as the best three working artists today.
@stevehutch2 жыл бұрын
@@MichaelPenick I often think that Olivier Coipel’s talent is wasted on comics. Each panel he illustrates is a painting in itself. He should be painting the Sistine chapel not illustrating comics. But seriously though, his artwork in the Straczinski Thor run in 2008 and Fraction Thor run in 2011 were the most detailed, dynamic and expressive artwork of any comic i have seen since the Neal Adams Batman days.

Mr. Jose Louis Garcia Lopez is the only artist whose art and stories has appealed me to read DC comics. Also his anatomy and perspective art is mind blowing. So simple yet so impactful. 👌 Your video has well covered his style of art form. Please keep uploading.
