@@UKLightingProject yeah, any light bulb that emitted under 45 lumens per watt were banned except for appliance and bug lights, that’s the simplest way to explain it if you want to know more you can find out more on the internet :)

Last August, the United States government banned the first-hand sale of any light bulb under 45 lumens per watt and between 310 and 3300 lumens, with certain exceptions such as colored bulbs, appliance bulbs, and other “specialty” bulbs. The ban covers most types of incandescent and halogen bulbs, which is why you don’t see as many of them in stores anymore. It’s also worth noting that all these bulbs can still be sold second-hand, such as in a thrift store or resold on eBay.

@@UKLightingProjectNo, it doesn’t include fluorescents unless they are under 45 lm/W and between 310 and 3300 lm, but I don’t know of any that would be. This particular ban only applies to the US, but other countries have their own rules regarding light bulbs.

Older fluorescent lights had a push button switch in place of the starter. You held down the button about one or two seconds until the filaments glowed then you let go of the switch.

I'm pretty new into this switch hobby, but my house has alot of Eagle switches around (built in the 70s). Are they common in older homes? Also, why are the screw terminals so dang hard to open on those.
@rs12official
@rs12official 7 күн бұрын
@@StupidLightingFreak I’m not super knowledgeable about switches either, but I believe Eagle was a fairly popular brand back then. The screw terminals are probably just stiff because they haven’t been moved in 40+ years. Perhaps they could be a bit corroded if they were in a moist environment. They will probably loosen up if you mess with them a bit.

Wonder what the purpose of a blacklight setting on a desk lamp?? Only real reason that comes to mind would be maybe in a bank to help detect counterfeit bills? A bit more than I would personally spend on a desklight but very cool nonetheless

@@Sparky-ww5re That’s what I thought at first too, but I believe some of the advertising for it claimed that it was for disinfection. It’s probably more of a scam than anything though, as it can’t possibly emit UV-C light. Personally, I would choose a lamp with a replaceable bulb over this integrated LED garbage any day of the week, but definitely still a neat concept, and I could see this being useful for money authentication even though it’s not advertised as such.

One of my favorite part of fluorescent lighting is there are so many failure modes, ranging from a totally dead lamp to a lamp litteraly exploding if a shorter, let's say 24 inch or less, tube is accidentally installed in a fixture thats been converted to type B double end wired LED and the supply is 277 or 347 volts, as this can be enough to instant start a short lamp and mains voltage can have several thousands of amps of short circuit current available in commercial systems, whereas a ballast is a current limiting device, with most T8 lamps operating in the 200-265mA range, standard T12 around 430mA, T12 HO 800mA, and VHO T12, powergroove , F90T17 & the obscure F54T17/SDB/VHO mogul bi-pin aka Super Diazo Blue l lamp operating at 1500mA, or 1.5 amp max. To reduce the risk of lamp explosions whenever you bypass a ballast to use type B LED tubes you are supposed to apply the labels included with the tubes, to the fixture where it can be easily seen when changing a lamp, to warn people the fixture has been modified to run LED and not to insert a fluorescent lamp. Longer lamps pose less of a risk because the striking voltage is generally above 450 volts , but single end wired LED eg. Hot/neutral at same socket can cause the end of a fluorescent tube to crack or shatter when 277 V is used regardless of length. 277V is also within the starting voltage of most probe start MH and all MV, so the same labeling should be applied to an HID fixture where the ballast has been bypassed to operate a cob style LED. Pulse start metal halide and high pressure sodium lamps can require anywhere from 2,000 to 5,000 volts to strike, so these lamps simply won't light when installed in a ballast bypassed fixture. Of course it's more common than you think for these LED conversion warning labels to be tossed in the trash and not installed on the fixture, creating a safety hazard to an unsuspecting maintenance worker or custodian replacing failed lamps.
@rs12official
@rs12official 11 күн бұрын
@@Sparky-ww5re Personally, I don’t even think direct-wire LED tubes should even be used. A much better solution is a separate LED module and driver, where the driver is installed into the fixture in place of the old ballast, and the actual “lamp” itself is just the LEDs that are powered by the driver. Another solution would be to use a new LED-specific lampholder. This could even be used in conjunction with a separate driver. I believe there is or was one LED tube manufacturer that used a slimline Fa8 lampholder on one end and a bi-pin G13 lampholder on the other end. But it could also be an entirely new size of base that is not in use by any fluorescent or HID lamp, like a G10 for fluorescent or an E35 for HID.
