Does this replace the need for an HRV or ERV? If not, could heat/enthalpy recovery be built into this product to accomplish that? Seems like a logical idea?
@GreenHomeInstitute

Hello - You likely would not want to have an ERV or HRV while also having this however we are not aware of any units with energy recovery at this time. You are right though, it would be ideal to build that in. I believe one of the company employees is experimenting with a new product like that now. Stay tuned and make sure you are on our mailing list to get more info as we learn more greenhomeinstitute.org/mailing-list/

Thank you. Glad you appreciate the time that went into creating this educational video. The intent of this webinar was to teach about passive solar - specifically, anyone who would be designing a home. There was simply not enough time in the short one-hour course to also show more examples of built passive solar homes without sacrificing the educational aspect. There are many other GreenHome Institute webinars and videos that showcase examples of built homes that include passive solar and other sustainable technologies so please check those out. If you were referring to the presenters of the webinar, you can check out the individual websites to see built homes including Orlo Stitt's passive solar subdivision.

seems to me that designing balance ventilation is not rocket science... Flow in to the house = flow out of the house. What are we really talking here??? 100cfm in 100cfm out move air from moist places out like bathrooms laundry room and kitchen..replace the air with inflow air to places like bedroom and living room perhaps if you think you need it tiny tubes running to just keep air from getting stale into a closet..(personally think this is over kill) When cooking need a dedicated make up air vent to balance out whatever one is venting via a range hood. Does not matter if it is a small residential building or a large multi family building.. Like any quality duct system straight runs are always better. Every time you put in a bend you reduce air flow wheather it is a hvac or plumbing or a ventilation system Bends kill pressure and flow. Good quality filtration perhaps to mirv 13 will go a long way to improving air quality. So I come back to the original question... if one uses common sense should not need an engineer to build a rocket

100% Steve ~ thanks for your comment, not rocket science just building science :) You’re obviously ahead of the curve when it comes to delivering superior air quality. I find many teams aren’t, and it can be challenging for homeowners and residential architects to find professionals with your understanding. I really trust Certification that includes third party testing to be a great tool for delivering QAQC especially for teams that haven’t worked together before or are doing this kind of work for the first time. Be well!

Here are the live survey results from this webinar " Based on the survey results, people learned about innovative building materials such as the Perfect Block, Fastfoot, insulated concrete forms, and timber HP Batts wood fiber insulation. They also gained insights into new construction techniques for high-performance foundations and the use of double stud walls for energy efficiency. Additionally, there was interest in the collaboration between students and firms representing new technologies, and the potential for cost-effective vocational educational programs in high schools. Questions that still remain include inquiries about reusing water removed from the system, the carbon impact of construction processes, and the specific details of the new foundation system mentioned in the survey." Climate Change will impact everyone. It is making weather events more extreme. Individuals, politicians and businesses need to dump fossil fuels and install solar energy. We are destroying the very air, land and water resources we all need to survive. We must take better care of the natural environment. All government buildings must install solar panels. All businesses must install solar panels. Coal power plants need to shut down and be replaced with solar energy.

@@GreenHomeInstitute The green part of zip sheathing is the water barrier. In an exterior wall installation, the green side facing outward makes sense to protect the OSB substrate and the interior from outside weather. In an exterior ceiling installation, one would likewise expect the same outward facing orientation to protect the OSB and interior from weather from above. With the green side facing inward, wouldn't a roof leak damage the OSB substrate of the zip sheathing because the weather barrier is on the opposite side of where the weather protection is needed?

Bicycles, ebikes, electric cargo bicycles, robo taxis and escooters are great options for last mile, short distance travel. Reduced transportation costs and fossil fuels free transportation. Cities need to do more to encourage people to ride bicycles by providing SAFE, PROTECTED BIKE LANES and trails. Every adult and child should own a bicycle and ride it regularly. Bicycles are healthy exercise and fossil fuels free transportation. Electric bicycles are bringing many older adults back to cycling. Ride to work, ride to school, ride for health or ride for fun. Children should be able to ride a bicycle to school without having to dodge cars and trucks. Separated and protected bike lanes are required. It will also make the roads safer for automobile drivers. Transportation planners and elected officials need to encourage people to walk, bike and take public transportation. Healthy exercise and fossil fuels free transportation. In the future cities will be redesigned for people not cars. Crazy big parking lots will be transformed with solar canopies generating free energy from the sun.

Every home and business should install a rain water collection and storage system along with solar panels. Even in areas where rain is infrequent it is crazy to waste the little rain that does fall and waste it. We need to stop planting green lawns and switch to local native plantings around homes. It is crazy to plant lawns and build golf courses in dry desert areas. We waste too much water and electricity. the future is electric. Wind and solar energy along with electric vehicles are the future. Stop using fossil fuels. There is a climate crisis.

plumbers who charge more are not nice folks.. Lets face it.. one water in one water out and a pt overflow pipe.. Same on all water heaters.. takes the same amount of time.. Plugging in a 120 line is a lot faster than a 240 line. Still attaching a 240 line should only take 10 minutes As to how much power is needed mostly a factor of the incoming temp of the water from the ground. in most places 50 to 60 degree. For me a simple upgrade which virtually no one does is to temper the incoming water with solar thermal. Does not take a lot of power to go from 100 to 110 degree incoming water to the HP tank. In some cases the hp might never turn on.

Here's a summary: - 120 volt heat pump water heaters plug directly into a standard wall outlet, making them easier to install than 240 volt models which require a dedicated circuit. They have lower power but larger tank sizes to store more hot water. - A field study of 32 homes in California found 120 volt heat pumps reduced the amount of energy used to heat water by 85% on average compared to gas water heaters. They provided satisfactory hot water and most users were happy with performance. - Up-sizing the tank 1 full size when switching from gas/propane is recommended, as heat pumps have lower "first hour ratings" for recharging hot water use. Proper sizing is important to avoid runouts. - Installation is typically a one-day process for plumbers. Cost is similar to 240 volt models but more than gas initially, but savings on energy bills often outweigh the difference over time. - Load shifting studies are exploring automatically pre-heating water during off-peak periods to reduce energy costs and grid impacts. The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) provides tax credits to help cover installation costs. - Performance is better in warmer climates but cold climate studies are also underway. Proper room sizing and ventilation are important for heat pump operation in colder zones.
