Lovely brooms. Those handles are amazing! What makes the spiral bits in them?

They are so beautiful. As a beginner the wet finishing confuses me, because I don't see the harm in leaving the surface a little soft. I've made a bunch of wearables without wet finishing and the seat of my bottoms does pill, but it's no easier to scratch the wool away from the backing than it is to split a yarn or snag the stitches of a worked garment. All the teachers are giving the same advice to wet finish everything though. (Regular wash settings don't seem to make my pieces shrink, as I'm using cold water - but they've been washed!)

Beautiful work, I am trying a vineyard scene and am getting stuck. I should not have stared with something complicated but I really want to finish it. Any pointers? I think I need to use the curly fibers for the leaves on the vines.
