Hi, i am in a bit of a crisis. I am doing a string quartet for A level Eduqas, but the thing is texturally I don't think mine is right (My other parts don't really go in thirds and have as much balance as i think it should have, they seem quite independent) I think i overcomplicated my melody themes, and as a result I couldn't really add complicated movements in the other parts. However, the brief was compose a piece for four musicians- it didn't say it had to be a string quartet in the style of Mozart. do you think this a serious issue, and I am going to be marked quite low ? I just don't know what to do. My school keep saying it's fine, but i know having looked at this video, it's not. what should I do ?

Hello - it all depends on the style you're going for and what the marking criteria is for your composition. Most exam boards do give marks to students who demonstrate knowledge of a particularly style (e.g. like string quartet, pop music, traditional music etc), so definitely check out the marking criteria for your board too. If you are sure that you want your composition in the style of a string quartet, it's always a good idea to check out what other composers have done in the past (Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven are definitely among best exemplars of this genre). Also, if you want to compose in the style of a Mozart quartet, it's worth remembering that the melody for nearly all music from the Classical Period (including string quartets) is usually balanced, more simplistic / memorable / clear / repetitive. Perhaps simplifying your melody so that you can sing/whistle it (like the melodies in the video above) and assigning particular roles to the other instruments may help improve the composition? Roles for instruments could include the following: does the 2nd violin harmonise the 1st violin melody; does the 2nd violin and viola harmonise each other; does the cello provide forward momentum with repeated quavers or does it provide a solid harmonic foundation with simple root notes for each chord; can the melody move between parts or be developed through fragmentation / diminution / sequence / augmentation / imitation etc etc; or can a countermelody be added? If you keep your melodies relatively simple, then all of these developmental ideas are much easier to do. Check out the next video to see what I mean: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r81gppSU0Z_LZJs.html

When explaining the minor key, the mediant chord is III+ because of the #7 of harmonic minor scale.
@topscoremusicacademy
@topscoremusicacademy 4 ай бұрын
Hi - yes you're right, if you use the harmonic minor scale. Most Baroque/Classical and even Early Romantic pieces avoided the augmented mediant chord (III+) because it sounds so dissonant and unusual. So they used the melodic minor version of the chord instead (III), as it gives us the relative major chord, which is not only a very stable, consonant sounding chord, but is also where minor pieces tend to modulate to as well. 👍

I'm two minutes in and am surprised to see a mnemonic which is NOT a palindrome - for it is as a palindrome, that this young musician loved seeing and remembering in ONE palindrome, both the flat sequence and the sharp sequences: In case this might help a viewer: Sharp mnemonic: Father Charles Goes Down And Ends Battle Flat mnemonic: Battle Ends And Down Goes Charles' Father Thank you for crystal clear videos.

Hi Decky! Thanks so much. I'd love to see more of these bouzouki videos. They were really helpful to me and the format you are teaching in here is great, and not like any other bouzouki videos I've seen on you tube. It really helped me connect the chords with the idea of counterpoint and gave me a good base to bring to a session. I'd really love to see more videos of different tunes but in the same format(basic/advanced with counterpoint melody). Thanks again.
