Love the song and the score, (sadly, no soundtrack ever produced) - original version was a 45 RPM and not easy to find, but Maureen re-recorded it with just a piano for a promotional-only cd that showcases film themes. This version, without the orchestra and percussion, misses a lot of the song's power, but on CD, to the best of my knowledge, it is the only way to have this particular song. The cd is collectable and is getting more and more expensive to obtain. As for the movie, it was produced to cash-in on little Ricky's tears and cherubic face which was the selling point of "The Champ." Here, (this is my opinion as a film-critic) he overdoes the tears and the cuteness, to a point that almost sinks the film's intended emotion. Thankfully, he's a good enough actor alongside Holden, and along with the great technical attributes of the film, overall makes it a compelling and moving movie. I have two problems with the film. (Spoiler ahead!) After Holden tells the boy he is dying and will have to make it on his own, followed by a note-for-note re-do of his crying fit in "The Champ," we see little Sean bending over the grave of his new buddy. Now here's the questions: How did Sean get this big guy buried in the first place? Did Holden fall into a grave, have Sean beat him over the head with a shovel until he died (mercy-killing) or did he just die and the little boy dragged him into the hole and then buried him, or are we supposed to believe that Holden dies (In bed, at the table, on the toilet, swimming, hunting?) and Sean takes it from there? I suppose this is one of those instances in which you have to offer a charitable suspension of disbelief. Second question: Who the crap decided to name this "The Earthling?" This sounds like a sci-fi film, and many people thought it was going to be. Wouldn't a better title have been "Halfway Home?"

This movie smells of paedophilia. Things sure were twisted in the 80s.

Might have won an Oscar if Brooks had stepped aside and hired, say, Robert Redford to play the lead role.

Knots landing actor William Devane name comes up before Tommy Lee Jones in the film. That wouldn't happen now. But to be fair William Devane could have been a Hollywood A-lister star too like Tommy Lee Jones. William Devane if notice has a pit Jack Nicholson about him, but not as good as him. Anyway look William Devane is a good actor.
