That was cool. Thanks for that. I was 5 when my dad took me to see it in 69'. The visuals are forever in my soul. Your creation filled a couple holes.

For this specific design, I don't know. Orion could use, basically, anything wet. Including, err, biological waste from the crew. If you ever doubt that man descended from apes, consider that we designed a spaceship that propelled poop with nuclear force for propulsion.

I did mine years ago. Now I will have to improve. I use a unconventional method and software. I use Lumion. 3D max or Blender is better. But Im used to Lumion.

By far the hardest part for me was the lighting. Kubrick used seriously odd lighting, combined with real nuclear flash paint on the models.

Brilliant graphics - music in 2001 is a comment to what you see in the movies - and how objects and people move. Blue Danube is a waltz because the space ship rotates so keep in mind that the visual effects determine what music you should use to comment on the scene. Always keep that in mind - this is a constant in 2001 and the reason why other producers got it wrong.

Say what you want, but US and Russia have brilliant scientist and engineers that can build some of the most stunning aircraft. Russia just lacks the funds to keep up. Whereas China has many of their scientist and engineers with PHD's in stealing and copying US aerospace secrets.

Very nice work. I did some amateur 3D modeling back in the late nineties, so I can imagine the massive work you put into this. If you decide to do more space renders like this, you should look into the lighting used in “Interstellar”. I think the term might be “over-saturation”, meaning white surfaces are almost glowing. I think this works because the contrast between shaded areas is so great that white surfaces have to be super bright to be seen in the same shot (in real life). It gives space scenes a more realistic look. Kubrick seemed to use the same technique in “2001” because he had seen film from spacecraft in the sixties. Just a thought in case you want to try another cool render. Obviously, any effect like that might use more CPU power, but hopefully not too much.

Great to see. Original movie: Beginning of shot: space station in orbit, earth drifting, shot from six inch colored transparency on an animation stand, moving SS 5 rotating at 0.0025 of an inch per frame (6mm) star shots separately to match, then matte it to clear all elements in shots. Space Station model is six feet in diameter.- Taken from J Agel’s book. The BP score conducted by HvK makes a difference
