My daughter and her husband just bought a house and there’s a trellis with two completely feral wisteria plants growing on it. This has given me a clear idea of how to help her rein them in. Thanks!

Best video I have seen on this subject by far. The other videos only explain how to prune an established plant - not how to manage a new plant in its first few years. This is what most people need to know. Thank you from the UK.

Wisteria sinensis is invasive as it produces copious viable seeds and smoothers plants. My plant was not W sinensis.

I love Salvias of all kinds. There are many. But my concern about Amistad and some other varieties, is that they are not native. I am on a mission of planting only native. Non-native plants cost us in the billions of dollars of losses in our country, every year. It impacts not only crops, but harms wildlife. It’s worth looking it up.
@PlantedwithIanCooke19 күн бұрын

After a while, i face a yard and garden with nothing but hard CLAY!!! I keep losing the battle year after year!!! I begin to hate CLAY and don't know the porpoise of CLAY is ???!!! NO PLANTS, NO FLOWERS AND NO GRASS Growing!!! Also Kansas weather is very wishy-washy until first of summer, we have very severe winter extremely cold and extremely hot summer!!! What i do wrong??? Or what i need to do to keep the top soils every year i spend over a $1000 just for soils and before before summer is over, top soils are gone disappeared 😢! Also, do i have to pull out the roots out from garden and exam them and keep them in pot as you showed??? Please HELP HELP HELP HELP HELP, i am losing my mind Beside losing money 😢
@PlantedwithIanCookeАй бұрын
Start small and gradually increase your garden area. I would add piles of leafs and other organic matter 18” high, plant in these next spring after they have rotted down. Use kitchen scrapes, mulch, leafs. This pile will provide a home for worms and other biologicals. Dahlia don’t like frost

The same thing happened with one leaf of an all green hosta. Any tips to propagate and encourage the variegation? I have a question: 1)how would I prune back a hugely overgrown and out of control wisteria? It’s growing over a big arbor. There are twisted branches (more like tree trunks). 2)Do you have tips on how to prevent shoots growing back from thick branch/trunk vines I’ve cut off? A spray or paint? Constant trimming? I love the branch system you created. Thank you! 💜

Hi! I'm planning to cover the entire 2 acres of lawn with this plant so no grass will grow anymore. Since it's May and grass is growing, should I wait until winter when grass dies and then throw the seeds in spring? Or can I just throw this invasive species onto the grass and hopefully Ajuga will grow on top of the grass?
@PlantedwithIanCooke2 ай бұрын
Which Ajuga do you plan to use. Seed is a great way to establish a large area, I would sow a trial area; one with grass cut short and the clippings left as mulch and one with a herbicide used to kill the grass. Once the seeds germinate and must not dry out. Alternatively you could apply multiple seed applications to the entire area, one application now, one in July, another in September. This would allow you to adjust for patchy growth. It’s a bold plan

I really like the foliage on Rodgersia, it reminds me of brambles AKA Blackberries. Although the Rodgersia doesn't grow everywhere, while being covered in thorns. I think the bramble foliage is underrated, funny how stinging and thorny plants have conditioned us to hate from youth, but are very nice plants if you can see past their faults.

Try and find Rubus lineatus, it’s a member of the blackberry and raspberry group of plants with the foliage and thornless

What type of soil did you use?
@PlantedwithIanCooke2 ай бұрын
Don’t over amend your soul. The plant will grow out of it in time. Add 5% organic matter, compost, old leafs to what ever native soil you have and mix in well. Dig a wide planting pit and back fill. Do not over compact add water and stand back.

Hello ! Thx for your wisteria videos . This will be my first time planting my Wisteria sinensis. My husband is sooooo dead set against it of course 😖because I want to plant near my house and it’s wood siding 🫣… anyway, I have done my research about the pruning 3 times yearly, my question is for training the vine what is best and easiest to attach to wood on house and how to prune to get it to flower ( hasn’t flowered yet) , what soil is best as well as mulch ? Any advice well appreciated!
@PlantedwithIanCooke3 ай бұрын
Do not plant straight Wisteria sinensis, this invasive, chokes trees and produces viable seed that continue the cycle. You must buy it in flower to be sure of the color. It must be a named cultivar as this ensure you get the spectacular flowers. The videos explain how to prune.
