Obviously this is a very old video; but it is very well done and will defnitly help me build my pillar; I have a very difficult time finding the right brick here in Phoenix area; need 12x4x4 or 9x3x3 with holes, not solid.

That was a great description of brick angle & what to watch out for. Definitely a helpful video. Had to laugh at the jealous comments made from people who know better because their father or uncle was a brick layer. Maybe brick laying is genetic because those comments were made by tools!

Hi I have a question about the column you built for the gate that was on a concrete slab. You put rebar in it--and said you would reenforce it with mortar. Can I build a column on concrete steps doing the same? Putting rebar in it with concrete? Without it tipping over?
@ElvenJustice
@ElvenJustice 3 ай бұрын
Just like all other useless videos on the subject, you started with the column already started so we never get to see how or where the foundation is started. If I had to start with virgin ground with no bricks in site, can I just start piling bricks on the surface level dirt? NO! I have t dig a hole for the foundation first, then lay the foundation before the first brick. But HOW DEEP should I dig the hole and what would I make the foundation out of, Loose sand and plenty of water? Probably not, but I don't know because all you fuckers treat foundations like an industry secret.What outside dimensions should it have? do I use wood sawdust, pebbled concrete or what do I need to use to make the foundation out of? how wide? how thick? do I ever need concrete? should I use Re-Bar?

Wow dude...just scroll for a video that features building foundations. His title is specific to how to lay patterns of brick for column and soldier courses. No reason to go off on the guy.

Great job. Hint: when laying the next brick place your left hand palm on both the last and next brick to assure they are at the same height.

holy crap I can't believe he talked about the excess water getting sucked into the masonry. I've had to do this myself because my house has no running bond, it was like the block foundation was done by a blind crew. So when I had to work on it, and I was adding cell rebar during mud sill replacement, I ended up trying both cementall at a fluid consistency and then due to expense, just sand/topping mix, loose enough to pour. I did a lot of research and thinking about that. and I came to the same conclusion, that a lot of the extra moisture gets sucked out anyway. of course I don't think you can do anything about the shrinkage from that but I think that's a different concern. in the end it didn't seem to matter much, both "formulas" hardened up strong

This guy does everything the same as we did including the setup,layout, and bricklaying. We did our ties a little different- bend tie at hole near end less than 90 degrees- place on top of wall -tie will extend beyond face so it needs to be bent back making sure that completed bend is 1/2” inside of face of joint- remove from top of wall and hammer bend flat. Make up several the same way on setup plank. Use 8 galvanized nail and locate nail slightly above brick and drive slightly downhill. When nail is too high tie will flex.

WOW! This guy is good! One of the most important points that he makes concerns furrowing. Although furrowing is taught, practiced, and accepted as the "right" way to lay mortar, he explains exactly why furrowing is forbidden by many architects and engineers. Just remember, neither bricks nor mortar are water proof. Both bricks and water absorb water. If anyone ever tells you that you need to furrow your mortar, just refer to the points that he makes: 1.) Furrowing does not fill the holes in the brick, and 2.) It creates a horizontal void that is ideal for collecting water, which is exactly what destroys brick work over time -- especially in areas of the country where we have a melting and freezing cycle in the same day (Colorado, Wyoming, Montana --- places that I have lived and worked). The water collects in the day time, then it freezes at night. This causes the water to freeze and expand, which then causes the joints to crack, which then lets in more water, which eventually leads to crumbling of the brick work.
