I'm relatively new to opera, and saw this opera a few years ago and it blew me away! You do such a favor by explaining what makes this opera so unique. I was stunned to learn after seeing it that their were actual arias in the opera, because my experience of it was that it was simply wall-to-wall sound waves breaking over and over and over and over. Thanks for supplying the Nielsen link as well - my next stop.
You are so brave. I was typing this about to say you are so tough on yourself, but hearing the end. Girl you already know. You have high standards which is not a bad thing. Opera Yoga. #youareawarrior ❤️

Hi Anna, you do this really well! What I’ve always been wondering about: opera singers from all sorts of nationalities have to sing Italian and German, sounding as closely as possible to the native tongue. Most succeed really well (not all, unfortunately), but how do you do that? Special pronunciation classes? Go live in Italy for a couple of years? Would be great if you can cover this in one of your KZfaq videos. Keep up the great work!

Amazing. I stumbled over this aria while doing some research on Klaus Nomi. His interpretation of this aria literally blew me away...and I say this as a metalhead. Klaus Nomis voice is so unbelievably brilliant and clear, his body language minimalistic but so expressive. I put this on my funerals playlist. 🫢

Do opera singers sometimes improvise? Like at that point in time at 23.03 you could very well slide from G#4 to G#5 and could even sound better. For example As Dimash did in O Sole mio : kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qcCDh85j2uCyeXk.html

It's so cool to see your reaction to Waltraud Meier's Isolde in Munich. :D Definitely my favorite performance as well. Have you seen the Bayreuth 1995 production with Barenboim, Meier, and Siegfried Jerusalem? She was in better voice for it there, but the acting is better here in the Munich performance. Her Liebestod could have gone on another hour in this one and she would likely still have everyone entranced in place. (Mind, Zubin Mehta set a brutally slow tempo here, especially at the start... Amazing she didn't turn blue in the process).. - If you have time, would love to see you watch Astrid Varnay as the Kostelnica in Jenufa in Munich 1970. Cheers!

Haven't seen that exact one but I LOVE Jerusalem as well, so I'll have to check it out soon!! Thank you for the tip :) I will have to check out the Jenufa clip as well, what an amazing opera, definitely not performed as much as it deserves to be!

@@operaanna My pleasure! Thank you for all your explain the aria clips. They're wonderful! <3 I wish Jenufa would be performed more often, too. Especially since there are many wonderful dramatic voices singing today. Luckily for us, the 1971 Munich Jenufa is uploaded in whole at kzfaq.info/get/bejne/orJ2e8J41t7Vh30.htmlsi=C1-aCHUJgPHnEh5_ Only one of the few live videos of the great Astrid Varnay doing her thing, and it's very late into her career. Interessantes Video!

Well, Mozart is much more than a thorughfare. He integrated the invention of Bach with the Even Tempered Piano. Which - as such - never a problem for the string player Mozart playing on the unfretted violin. We KNOW that, because Mozart worked Johan Christian Bach - one of Bach surviving children (infant mortality was rampant). Bach had actually written down what he had invented/discovered to his musician son (all Bachs were musicians), Kunst der Fuge is another example, so his children would have a head start. Bach was much, much more a teacher than Mozart. We have some notes from Mozart getting to grips with poliphony which Mozart knew, but never came natural to him, so he had to write it to maintain a context. Mozart also brought the "story" into opera. The liberetto was as important to Mozart as it was to Verdi - Mozart clearly knew that people did not want to be BORED and a greek God is BORING - whereas your hairdresser has great gossip. Mozarts story line was much to messy to be accepted by todays Hollywood. In "Nozze.." there are plotholes you can drive a freight train through - and he saves the plot by calling it "a day of confusion" so the audience is not wondering what is going on. as the characters in the opera itself have no clew. It was left to Beethoven to put hatred into music. Not to mention Wagner. With exception of Gershwin no american composer has really progresses beyound plunking a guitar (an instrument Mozart heartedly dispiesed.) With Haydn Mozart got into the horrible mess of the woodwind - and actually wrote the definitive work. KV622 concerto in A major.
@thomasborgsmidt980115 күн бұрын
Not ornamenting? Nonsens. We know that Mozart wrote the bare minimum in the score - that was the boring and time consuming part. We KNOW that Mozart ornamented freestyle. We KNOW that from a letter from Nanr, where she specifically ask him to write out the ornaments for her sake.
@operaanna12 күн бұрын
Exactly! Unfortunately as a singer in the field, I've been advised not to ornament Mozart for myriad reasons. It is absolute nonsense.

But there eventually IS a resolution, a climax if you will, in this piece. The longing is almost palpable, brought to life by the musical notes; combine the wonderful tonality with singers and action on the stage -- undeniable drama and pathos. I'm not an opera fan, just attracted to beautiful music in smaller doses than a full opera.
@operaanna4 күн бұрын
True! Wagner does finally resolve it at the end. I know I said it doesn't get resolved but I meant more in terms of throughout the opera. I love your description of the longing being 'palpable', such a great way to describe it!

Pavarotti not suited at all for this aria, despite the general (incompetent) public association of it with him. The standard on this aria has been widely recognized to be set by mario del monaco, with possibly corelli for those who prefer spinto tenors. For obvious reasons Caruso (possibly the greatest tenor) should not be inlcuded in any list of those singing nessun dorma 😂. You are doing an excellent job, brava!
