Ryu cant complete. Evo proved that. He finished joint worst position out of all the characters. 97th and that was by paladin who is a legend rank ryu

Combos are probably 0% of what would make him better than you, pokes, whiff punishing, and counterpoking is much harder and just neutral are general

He really can't. Ryu is very good at Ranked, but in tournament he's getting thrown around. At first i thought it was because the people who played him weren't good but.. let's face it, it's been 2 years already and after the buff he still performed terrible at Evo, actually i think he was the worst. I'm not professional so i can't exactly tell why he's one of the worst character when it comes to tournaments. But my guess is that he just doesn't have any real gimmick to lean on even a bit. Denjin even after being buffed is pretty useless in a tournament scenario where most chars skip neutral, have good gimmicks, and have plus on blocks for free.. He's just getting cooked in any case. And I also forgot to mention that fireballs are pretty useless. I watch Legend Ryu's just in normal ranked and they still barely use fireballs, because the second they use it they get punished and the health bar is gone.

I think capcom needs to look into this more. Guile suffers too on this. Characters that are offensively driven are tournaments viable. Ryu could benefit from having safer fire balls, maybe if they reduced cool down and allow Ryu to have better fire ball cover with drive rush? I mean in theory, if Ryu was like Akuma with his projectiles he'd easily be top tier. But yes, overall Ryu and Guile suffer since they have a hard time creating their offense and can get stuffed in mid to close range situations. If this game didn't have DI, maybe things would be different, since most of Ryu's long range whiff moves would then be more viable. They could make his overhead start up more busted to improve block string situations, I guess that's another solution.
