It is good to run a diesel at W.O.T. sometimes. Ideally go to redline and back off 100 rpm and let it cruise for several miles or more 😅

@AskCaptainChris Good morning 10% would be 220 RPMs about. So that should work. On a older Detroit I would probably just run it wide open, they seem to love it 😀

I need to Ask Captain Chris. How many hour are to many hours on Caterpillar engines. I know a vessel with 1100 - 1200 hours is approaching life on a gas engine. How about diesels?
@AskCaptainChris
@AskCaptainChris 13 сағат бұрын
Depends a lot on the type and use of a boat, actually ABUSE. Diesels are expected to have well over 5,000 hours, some as much as 10,000 hours. BUT abuse those in a sportfisherman boat that crashes through waves racing out and back the drive train shock on the engine will shorten their life cycle. Ask a mechanic for your particular engine and boat use.

The captain did an excellent job bringing it in. But this video is an excellent example of a pet peeve of mine. The mate passed the bow line first, the line most requested of dock hands. But the dock hand made it to tight/short, resulting in less control for the captain and preventing the stern from being able to be brought in tight to the dock. How do you deal with this situation, captain Chris?
@AskCaptainChris
@AskCaptainChris 2 күн бұрын
Easy, I ask my deckhand to stand midship and hand out the mid line NEVER the bow line first. Mid then stern and finally bow line. Look back at yesterday's docking with two dockhands.

The deckhand should have had lines ready before they turned into the marina basin. The dock girls were okay, but they were obviously unprepared to compensate for the amateur on the sportfish's foredeck. And look at the exhaust smoke - that port engine either has clogged injectors, a blocked air filter or a failing turbo.
