That little drawer is too small to be of any value whatsoever!! The best hack for plein air: two cradled paint boards connected by torsion hinges plus tripod plate; lower serves as palette; upper serves as support for your panel/canvas with lightweight clamps and back cradled side doubles as a wet canvas carrier. Easy peasy, you're in business!!

This whole video has a magical quality to it. It's a shame you ran out of light in the end. You mentioned you had dogs. Have you ever or would you ever paint them or do you strictly only do landscapes? I tried looking for that art magazine while visiting Durham city but unfortunately they didn't have it. Do you know if it was released in the UK?

Your explanation of everything involved with oil paintings was excellent and you provided a lot of useful information. I still find it a bit intimidating, though I guess the only way around this is to just start, and play around with everything. I find the ability to correct mistakes with oils very appealing so there are things im excited about when I start using them. One thing im still unsure about is how to dispose of turpentine and unused paint

Newsagents in the UK are getting harder to find as demand for magazines is drying up. There's one in Durham city and I'm taking part in a life drawing class there in a couple of weeks. I'm hoping to find a copy of the magazine there. It must be a dream come true to be featured in the magazine. I'd also never heard of substack. There must be a lot of rocks in Europe 😂

It was very enjoyable watching you take us through the process of another painting. I previously mentioned I wanted to start painting with oils but find the idea a bit intimidating. I'd be very interested to see a video of everything you need equipment-wise, as well as any tips or advice, if you were to do something like that.

Thank you for introducing us to another artist. I'd never heard of him. I wonder if you're familiar with The great wave off kanagawa. That's my favourite painting and I love that style of art. What do you think of the paintings from that era of Japan?

You're very welcome :) I myself have only seen a couple of paintings by Rousseau until this exhibition so it was mostly a discovery for me as well :) I'm familiar with 'the great wave off Kanagawa' by Hokusai and also know his work of Mount Fuji but that's basically it... I must admit that my knowledge of Japanese art is shockingly little - I am a bit better versed in Chinese ink paintings. Coming from a place of ignorance I don't feel like my commentary on Japanese art would be very valuable but I do love how movement is conveyed both in landscape and portrait paintings.

I'm glad I was able to help you discover a new artist David! I've only ever seen a couple of his paintings that are usually exhibited at the Musée d'Orsay so it was quite the discovery for me as well :) You should definitely try it - with the transparent quality to them as well as the longer drying time you can modify so much of what you do, should you be unhappy with the results. On the contrary, I feel like oil paints are quite forgiving and you don't necessarily have to restart from scratch if you don't like how everything turns out (cough cough watercolors cough cough)

That is so nice of you to say, David! There are still two sessions to come with this particular one. I'm unsure as to whether I'll continue this video format for other paintings though because I don't see these videos perform as well as the shorter ones unfortunately and they take me much more time to edit and upload :/ I'm not saying that I won't don anything like this in the future, but I need to observe the feedback I get from these a bit longer before committing :)

I love the colours. I especially love the glass of gin. It's making me thirsty and I want to reach in and drink it. I know you focus more on landscapes, but it's nice to try other things. I've been doing a lot of watercolor paintings in the last few months and despite not liking it at first, I love it now

Haha, gin can have that effect indeed :D Yes I feel like trying out new genres really helps change your perspective and avoid getting too much into a routine that kills the vibe. I'm glad that this technique works out for you as well! I wish I could manage watercolors but I have difficulties shaking the reflexes you gain through painting with oils so much and I always end up having something way too muddy :/

I hear your frustration but sometimes its just better to give up and get the best out of a situation. Im originally from north Yorkshire but have lived abroad for more than 30 years. I would love to stand up there on that cliff and face out to sea with the wind blowing me all over the place , watching the light changing the colours at every second. The grave yard ot St. Mary's church is a dream for artists with its wind eaten , sandstone gravestones. I hope you left the car and walked down the 199 steps into the town , took a walk out on the sea wall and enjoyed some fish and chips! You said you were "on vacation" You lucky woman! This was an extended moan! Btw..EVERYONE choses thst view of the Abbey. Ive been up there with my class of 7 year school children and felt like we'd been shipwrecked after a lashing by the north sea wind and rain ..but none of us grumbled! Rant over!!

It definitely is a stunning place and an extremely beautiful area! I would love to come back for a longer period of time and be able to enjoy the different places without the pressure of plein air sessions as well as to get some paintings done :) I did have a peak of Whitby itself as well although there wasn't time for a proper fish and chips... See, that's yet another reason for going back soon! ;)

Thank you so much Colleen, that's so kind of you to say :) I must say I really enjoyed the colour combination, it felt so joyful and I had tremendous fun adding different layers with slightly different undertones to the greens and pinks. The letters were a nightmare for someone who doesn't have a steady hand, but the right brush helps bridge any shortcomings! :)

This was a fascinating look at the exhibition. It was very professionally made and you did Van Gogh justice. I can't wait to see the next lot of videos from you. Do you ever work with watercolours? I'm learning but it requires lots of patience.

Thank you David! I feel very passionate about him and even read his letters to Theo, his brother maybe 10 years ago. His life is so tragic so whatever helps us dive a little into his imagination and thought process is really both inspiring and humbling. I did but I struggled. A lot :D It feels very counterintuitive for someone who is used to oils, everything is inverted. I admire watercolor artists, you can achieve incredible things with it but unfortunately it's unlikely to be in the cards for me :)

Very good point about the economy and the right time to consider art as the hobby and living as the practicality. Even Levin from Anna Karenina worked on the farm to gain experience to enrich his experience. And I remind everyone that experience is art. But experience is also living and providing. Mostly for oneself and a few others, to be fair. Yet regardless, we as people need to work. Otherwise, shit people keep calling the shots. If someone's an artist and is struggling with this, now you know.

Exactly, it even was a common practice in schools for nobles to do agricultural work during the holdiday season to gain some perspective and appreciation for their status. And yes, we are not all fortunate enough to live entirely off our art so there are many different hybrid stages one can experiment with in order to give yourself the chance to venture down this path.

My studio is just a 8 x 12 room in the country with a desk, computer, card stock, and nib. Besides the cost associated with ink and cardstock, I've found I don't allow myself to buy extra stuff I don't need. To be fair, I'm cheap. Regardless, your channel has a good dark academia vibe with good art. Hmm.. Good stuff!

Such a great idea! I am going to screw a metal plate under my desktop easel and tap a 1/4 UNC thread in it so I can screw it straight onto the tripod adapter. Thanks for sharing the concept 👍

My husband and i sold our house and bought a trailer to downsize on our expenses and to travel. Talk about not having a studio. My space to work is the table and "family room" in a 27' space. I have one cabinet to store all of my art supplies. But i have the freedom to go places. And i can plein air paint to my heart's delight. It's all in the perspective and what you want to accomplish. I need help organizing since my space is so small. Which is why i clicked on this video.

That’s so true Sandra, thank you for sharing your experience with us! I feel like in the last couple of years more and more people are questioning the until now « established » or « classical » life style we were brought up to appreciate and turn to life models that fit them/ their values and choices much better and I’m happy to see that. Stability and consumerism has been such a big part of our lifes that it came to a point where we do need to question what is important to us and whan we value most. ❤️✨
