Hello Todd, In one of your recent sailing videos you mentioned a B and B on Cranberry Island. When I was out snooping around the Duck Islands, I noticed a large home on the north end of Little Duck Island. Do you happen to know anything about that place? I had read an article saying that it was a B and B - they bring the guests in by boat with a week's supplies, drop them off and then pick them up a week later. But I never learned who the owner is or any further details. Quite the B and B adventure, however, with that whole island to roam for a week. Lots of history there.

The house on Great Duck Island has been a weekly rental for quite a while. Acadia Sailing had the contract to drop off and pick up the renters. I don't know if the house is being rented this year. Here is a web site I found for it: greatduckislandhouse.com/ Here is a link to the site for the old life saving station on Little Cranberry Island. Although it is not as much of an isolated adventure, it is a very cool place with the added amenities of Little Cranberry Island. There is only one house near it and there are lots of beaches to explore, plus you might even see me out sailing. Another plus is that it is much easier to get to/from.

@@todddunn945 We've only been gone two years and I've already got the Ducks switched around. I would have bet that it was on Little Duck. We have no intentions of renting the place, unless I hit the lottery, that is. I have let my knees go so long that I barely can get around even with a walker or cane. I,ve seen 3 different surgeons, the first 2 deemed it was too risky, due to other health problems, and age at 73. The 3rd one, said he would do it, and was scheduled for May. Then I had problems with BP and other issues, so it got cancelled. Now tomorrow I see another surgeon. Eventually if I do it, I will have to do both knees, at different times of course. Must say your honesty about your surgery is an uplift to me to have it and knowing what to expect. I've done physical therapy off and on, trying to stay active as much as I can. But the therapy doesn't seem to be doing much good so far.

Yes inland temperatures are much more extreme than the shore temperatures. Inland it is hotter and more humid in summer and colder in winter than we are. That said, this summer has been warmer than usual. Last year we only went over 80 here in Bass Harbor one time (it went to 81). We have had 3-4 80+ days already this summer. After you've beaten or neglected that old boat, what do you do with it? At least you can chop up the wooden boat and throw it in the woodstove...Unfortunately, today recycling a fiberglass boat is an academic subject until you actually have to do it - and it aint pretty.
@todddunn94510 күн бұрын
Well actually you can't simply burn the wooden boat because of all the chemicals used in the coatings. Older wooden boats have lead based paints all over the place and the newer paints are not good to burn either. A fiberglass boat can be cut up, but even after 50+ years my fiberglass boat is very sound and should last another 50 years with some systems upgrades. @@todddunn945 Weather was 9/10 on the islands for us. We weren't driving the boat, so no biggie. Actually the fog seemed to avoid us for most of the day, somehow. On both islands we found secluded spots without anyone around for breaks and our bag lunches. The kids had fun wading in the water. The islands are nice enough. But then I'm just as happy walking around almost anywhere on the quiet side of MDI. I'm not much for the hurry up and wait or expense of riding the ferries. They also hosed us on the fare. We didn't know there is a family rate and it is not advertised on the web at all. We should have paid on the boat instead of pre-paying our fare. Live and learn. Like Haut, nice to do once, but not an every day for me. This is our first summer and I hear things get more crowded into August. It was great to meet someone involved in MDI sailing. Very interesting. I have not had the opportunity to compare my Princess with others. My boat has had a few more owners than yours some good things some bad. A few questions: is the deckplate/hatch on the port aft cockpit seat the propane locker? What is the deck fill on the port aft quarter? Does your hanging locker door not latch against the mast compression post providing privacy for the v-berth?
@todddunn94511 күн бұрын
I am at least the third owner of my boat. The second owner bought the boat in '87, but I don't know its history before that. Yes the hatch on the port aft cockpit deck is a Trident Marine propane locker I installed in '97. The port side deck fill is for my water tank. The original tank under the main salon sole was converted to the shower sump by a previous owner. Needless to say that tank is no longer used as a water tank although it is still there. I now have a bladder tank under the quarter berth. Yes the hanging locker door doubles as the door to the forward cabin. It has a fold up panel to completely close off the forward cabin except for about 6" at the bottom. I will try to answer any other questions you may have. What year is your princess? Mine is hull #8 laid up in November '72 but not launched until '73.
@jkepleriv11 күн бұрын
@@todddunn945 My princess is hull #71, depending on the document it was built in 1976 or 77. It still has most of the wood grain laminate. When I bought the boat a previous owner had retrofitted a bowstring with a forestay, solent stay, with a reefurl rolling furling, an inner stay for which I have two staysails. In 2015 the silent stay failed and in the repairs that followed I deleted it putting the new harken furler on a new forestay. I have and continue to use the undersole water tank. But it has been removed to replace the fuel tank and re-installed. The immediately previous owner replaced the engine with a rebuilt yanmar 3hm35F. Today, I finished replacing everything I stripped off the boat preparing for Beryl.

Is it just me or are you missing your main and boom. Looks like you had a good time never the less.
@todddunn94513 күн бұрын
Yes for various reasons I no longer use the main sail. It is home in my garage. I also leave the main boom off to remove temptation. The reasons are simple. First, I am getting a bit older and am no longer as spry as I once was. Consequently I prefer not to leave the cockpit if I can avoid it. The best way to do that is to not use the main. Even with lazy jacks setting and dropping the main does require going forward to the mast now and then even with lines led aft. The second reason is that my wife who is even older than I am is now basically a passenger who doesn't help with sail handling. So I prefer to have the boat set up so that I can easily and safely single hand it. My set up of roller furling jib and mizzen sail does not require that I leave the cockpit at all unless something goes terribly wrong with the jib. Also as you saw the boat sails well enough for me without the main. So, overall, not putting the main on the boat was a conscious decision. Notwithstanding the above, I am considering making some changes to the boat so that I can safely use the main. To that end I just priced a Leisure Furl furling boom. If I decide to go with that option I will be able to raise and lower the main from the cockpit simply by pulling on lines. The down side of installing a Leisure furl system is the cost which will run almost $20K for my boat (boom, solid vang, new sails, a new cabin top winch to handle lines, installation of turning blocks to lead main control lines aft, modifications to my dodger to pass the lines through it and a new sail). Given the value of my 50+ year old boat I haven't made up my mind if the changes are worth the cost, particularly since I will likely sell the boat in less than 5 years. I hope that answers your question.

@todddunn94513 күн бұрын
Not every sailing video is an attempt to teach people. I was simply demonstrating that a single handed sail on a mid size boat can be very relaxing and not a particular event. Personally I find all the fake drama about sailing to be rather annoying. You know, stuff like launching or hauling a boat or stepping a mast. Those things are routine, just like single handed sailing. Basically single handing is not hard, even a guy in his 70s can do it.
@comatoseps138213 күн бұрын
@@todddunn945 Understood, but I am sure you appreciate the feedback nevertheless. And nobody said the video had to be instructional. You could have still imparted interesting information all the same, just by what you chose to speak about. But didn't.
@todddunn94513 күн бұрын
@@comatoseps1382 Well I could have gone all pedantic since I am a retired professor, but I think that would have put people to sleep. I actually did another single handing video a week or so earlier in which I did talk about how the boat was set up and showed a few tacks etc as well as docking. Basically, in my opinion, all you need to do when single handing is think ahead a bit and know what you are going to do. A few years ago I single handed a Morris M36. That would have made a really boring video because of how the boat was set up. Set the boat up correctly and single handing is simple. for example on the Morris raising the full batten Maine consisted of turning into the wind, slacking the main sheet a bit, opening the clutch on the leisure furl furling line, wrapping the main halyard on the winch and pushing the winch button. Short tacking that boat consisted of turning the wheel since the jib as self tacking. Dead simple to single hand.
