The way my Son went from miserable and acting out to a flourishing, thriving, inspired, curious learner when I took him out of public school & put enrolled him in ECOT(1st Gen) forever ago was ASTOUNDING. He went from sullen, unmotivated, oppositional & encumbered to devouring knowledge, insatiably curious, full of wonder for his environment and larger world and totally self motivated. This kid went from flat out REFUSING to even entertain the IDEA of reading for knowledge or fun to ravenously gobbling up books on every possible topic. From hiding assignments and getting zeros to having his work for an entire quarter done on 1-2 days & then messaging the teachers at all hours of the night & day asking for MORE. He got to set his own pace and was free to roam around the house & yard at will, as long as his daily school work was completed before we locked up the house for the night. He even started testing out of required courses bc he took it upon himself to complete the full curriculum in advance and never lost the knowledge he gained. Everyone learns differently. Some of us need the ability to be in our comfort zone, set our own pace, make it a challenge for ourselves, spend days on one assignment either bc it's not something we particularly like or bc we are savoring every second spent, some of us are book learners, some of us only learn by doing, some of us NEED the pressure and structure of a classroom setting and a present teacher breathing down our necks while others absolutely can NOT learn effectively in that environment. My Son would have never made it through school had I not jumped at the opportunity of remote learning in its early days. I know he would have dropped out bc *I* would have too if it weren't for the fact that my Mom was a teacher in a neighboring district & it would have reflected poorly on her. I was in abject misery in a classroom setting. My mind was everywhere BUT where it needed to be. I saw that in my Son and gave him the option with a stipulation that if he didn't do well, we'd go back to traditional classroom settings & learning. He rose to the challenge like a Phoenix rising from its own ashes. Now he's 27yo, has two small businesses of his own & is thriving still. Moral of the story? Pay attention to your child's personal learning needs. Maybe it's not that they're bad at a subject or don't like learning. Maybe they just learn differently than the status quo. Give them what THEY require. Not what some governmental education appointee decided was good enough for the average person. Then sit back and let them SHINE.
