Very poignant video, the same happened to our local ILR station, gone altogether locally and in name (Beacon Radio) the 70s and the 80s were the 'golden years' for ILR.

Lancashire's best ever local commercial radio station, unrivalled, unbeaten, peerless and better than anything else currently broadcasting and on the air. The day it split into Red Rose Rock FM 97.4 and Red Rose Gold 999 AM was a sad day for commercial radio in Lancashire and the start of the rot set in. The 1990 Broadcasting Act was the worst thing to come out of the Tory Government, and the loss of regulation and break-up of the Independent Broadcasting Authority to separate bodies and eventually Ofcom has also been the biggest ever disaster for commercial broadcasting the UK has ever seen. If I was of charge of Red Rose Radio, I would have kept it independent, and refused to sell it to anybody, nobody would lose their job (I feel sorry for the hundreds of redundancies and job cuts through the years) and I would keep all the good things that people liked i.e. the Sue Manning jingles, the local ads, stereo classics, country music, Asian programme The Mix, Non Stop Top 20, Red Rose Top 40, the local politics programme, the late night phone in, the Red Rose Radio Roadshow, Red Rose Reports, Red Rose Sport, and all the other good things people liked, and I'd also put Red Rose Radio on cable TV systems all over Lancashire in stereo via the FM programme service to subscribers on cable all over Lancashire. The studios would keep the tried and trusted technology that the presenters loved so well i.e. the cart machines, the reel to reel tape recorders, the turntables, the mixing desks etc. A sad loss indeed. And even sadder as the very last vestiges of Red Rose Radio's heritage was switched off forever, the ancient 301 metres (999 kHz) MW transmitter at Longton Marsh, Longton near Preston Lancashire by Bauer's evil GHR (Greatest Hits Radio) service and I bet 97.4 FM will come up next for the chop at some point if and when DAB+ and online listening is decided as the future of radio listening. RIP Red Rose Radio you'll never rise again.

@@RodHardisty I remember its reporting on the Abbeystead Disaster in 1984, still shocking and forgotten today except by the people in St Michael's on Wyre and nearby. The victims were from St Michael's as I understand it. I recall that Red Rose won an award for the quality of its reporting on that dreadful night and its aftermath. More recently St Michael's has been in the news again and I was glad to see that the media did not mention what happened in 1984 as I am sure it is still a traumatic wound for such a small community. Perhaps no-one made the connection or if so a decision was taken to show some sensitivity for once.

I used to listen to this show during my teens. I loved Mickey from Walker and Marlene and Tommy. I really wonder what became of them, I don't suppose Marlene is still alive now. I always hoped Mike would get back on the air but I don't think we'd get away with a show like his phone-in these days. I'd love for these characters, those still with us to be found and record a catch up of how they're doing. A lost era, RIP Mike.

This is great. The camaraderie and love for the station all these years later is clear. The clips are well put together, capturing some of the essence of what made Red Rose such a force to be reckoned with. I am reminded of the line in 'Some Kind of Nothingness' by the Manic Street Preachers, ' still and lonely like an old school photograph', when I see old pictures frozen in time. The memories they stir are sometimes bitter sweet. But Red Rose was a truly vibrant station fizzing with life and gave happiness to a lot of people in Lancashire and beyond. I could be mistaken but there seems to be no sign of Simon Tate, Allan Beswick and Sally Moon. A good choice of suitably poignant music to accompany the stills.

I also meant to add- great picture of the church in the snow. Whenever I went past in the family car on trips to the Lake District, I used to be thrilled just to see the place that all those great programmes and music emanated from. A deconsecrated church was an inspired setting for a radio station.

According to John Myers’ book, Rock FM was given its name as the station was initially going to be based in Blackpool. However the agreement for the studio premises subsequently fell through and the station remained based in Preston. Sad to see that the only local output left on Rock FM soon will be a 3hr drivetime show broadcasting 5 days a week, with all other output networked from Manchester.
