is it a bad idea to use rubbing alcohol to try to clean it off? Im thinking it is since it might make it easier to absorb deeper into the skin.

I would add that if you know you are working near or In poison Ivy etc, you should dress appropriately; long sleeves, long pants, calf length socks, boots etc. it will help to keep the oil off your skin to begin with.

The problem is, you don't know you ever rubbed up against it. I got it from a dog's coat one time. It was horrible!

I found that is you rub Dawn Dish Detergent and a little water on your skin before you go in the field it works great. I get my arms neck and face/ears and let it dry. It is not uncomfortable at all. I never had soap in my eyes even when sweating. Then afterward a good shower and a whole body wash down. Has worked for me for 30 years with no ill side effects.

Bad information... If you don't use a grease cutter like Dawn, just a washcloth with warm water will just spread the oil around and make it worse... i'm shocked at how many poison ivy videos are giving bad info on how to deal with it... 😮

So use same wash cloth for all parts of the body that been in contact? Will it spread if using in different areas? What is the trick? Anybody, thank you for taking your time to answer my comment!

i learned one thing.. if you wash the oil from your body while in the shower, you'll have to wash your feet once out of the shower.. otherwise all that oil just accumulated on your feet and you're gonna have a bad time.. (also, ya may have to scrub your wash basin as well ;) )

In high school, I snuck out to meet a girl and we rolled around in the dark for 45 minutes. It was amazing. On Monday in school I asked her "hey do you have poison ivy?" We were covered all over in it. Those were the days.

I got a rash once. It only caused some goose skin on a spot for a fee weeks. No pain, no itch, no nada, just a weird spot on my arm. How bad do other people's reactions become? Can it be dangerous?

Late to the party, but I do have a question. If using a washcloth, must it be discarded after use? It an attempt is made to wash it, could it then contaminate the rest of the wash? I think I might stick with quality paper towels that are tear resistant when wet, if the item must be thrown out after use.

LOL, I just asked the same question before seeing yours. I would imagine, as virulent urushiol is, I wouldn't want to contaminate an entire wash with it. I'm guessing shop towels or even quality paper towels may be the route to go.

Donna here, I have poison oak in my flower beds. I was working on it today and after I came in , I used a soap that has grit in it (the name escapes me now). My dad used to use it when he worked as a mechanic. It works great!

My question is: how many washcloths do you need to totally clean off? I assume eventually one will get saturated. Also, how do you clean those cloths so that they dont transfer teh oil to the inside of the washing machine etc...

LISTEN UP IF YOU WANT REAL EFFECTIVE TREATMENT!!!!!! After the resin has soaked in and the body is in autoimmune response, no amount of washing will help, except for temporary relief from the water's cooling effect. My mom has a poison ivy patch on her property so I am speaking from horrifying personal experience! There is NOTHING I've tried as effective as CeraVe Moisturizing Cream. (No, this is not an ad; this is my personal testimony!) If you or someone you love is suffering; even years after contact, try slathering this on the rashes. Make sure its the Moisturizing Cream; not their lotion/cleansers. God bless you. Also, hydrotherapy WILL provide immediate and temporary complete relief!!!!! Start with immersing in the hottest water you can tolerate for 1 minute, then switch to the coldest you can tolerate for one minute. At least 3 switches is most effective. (Yes, at first the hot water will feel extremely 'exciting', wrong, and perhaps scary, but don't stop/judge until you've really tried it.)

I would toss the rag/washcloth. Buy those discount washcloths bundles just to have a pack around the house for this type of use. Pack of 10 for $3.99. 👍

Good description and clear demonstration on various sizes of trees. Thank you for not taking 10 minutes to describe the problem like many tubers do. Just a note that by the time you have chopped off a few sections the top end with branches is likely to lower itself enough that it comes free from the hang up. And you have reduced much of the weight which greatly reduces further risk. Like that you used a large enough tree example to illustrate the usefulness of a top notch.

Have you ever tried WD 40 on your arms or skin after coming in contact with poison ivy? I use it successfully each time I am out in the ivy. You are right you have to use friction with a cloth after rubbing in the WD 40. Good video.

I saw your response to a similar question about laundering it as usual. The laundry detergent will remove it from the cloth.
@danielhall6716 күн бұрын
Sound advice. So, is there any guidance on what to do with the washcloths after using them? Should I wash them by themselves in a washing machine so they don't spread urushiol to the rest of the stuff in the wash? Or should I just burn them because they could taint my future laundry loads with urushiol? Ha ha! I'm thinking of buying some super strong paper cloth that can withstand friction, but yet is disposable.

Where does it go though when you wash it off. Doesn’t it just contaminate your laundry and you put those “cleaned” clothes right back on.

It is completely removed in the laundry.
