Wonderful looking pens. That inlay technique is great. Other pens I saw you make you used a powder with a CA glue in guessing. I jist started making pens about 2 months ago and did one with some inlay. Turned out good for using some nail polish to fill in my groves I made. I am always looking for new ways to make them pop. Can I ask what that powder is? Maybe chat with you sometime to discuss pen techniques.

Sure, the inlay I’m using is a crushed Bello Opal. It’s a lab made opal that I produce and sell in my Etsy store. But there is nothing like it for the end result for inlay. But it is on the pricey side of inlay (about $10/gram) But it’s definitely worth the practice because their the coolest looking pens I’ve ever seen not being boastful but man they just look incredible with a good inlay and finish on them.

@cursed_to_toil awesome. I found your shop on etsy. I also looked back and noticed carbide tools for turning with the inlay. Are they needed or would traditional steel chisels work too?

Ok... listen... You just saved me! I'm a disabled single Mother and I don't make enough to live on my own yet. I'm hoping if I can make things, I can work around my disability. I'm new to wood turning and I love my WEN but I cannot turn that wheel!!! Now having been raised in a traditional family, I had to work very hard to get out of the kitchen to get into the garage and all my life being told how dangerous everything was and when men run to take over when I just hold the measuring tape has given me a healthy dose of fear and insecurity! It wasn't until recently that I realized... Men don't know what they're doing anymore than I am, they're just willing to just try methods until the solution ultimately works. Sometimes I struggle with feeling so out of my element and I wonder why I'm attempting this until this video! I didn't occur to me that men would struggle with this wheel as well! This is solution saved my business let alone my spirits. Such a simple fix, I did it myself, finally no man came to rescue me (because I kicked them all out of my garage) I didn't cry for once AND I just hollowed out my blank and it didn't even hurt! I'm liberated. Thank you for this ray of hope! More please!

Isnt there a dimple on the end of the mandrel and put a live center point in it? Thats the way mine is.

Mine does too, I have recently started using it that way and it has been working. However, I would really like to get into TBC for these but, I have not quite made that commitment yet lol. Those bushings are expensive lol

Quick tip is to watch your heat when sanding down and making a design of various sized dots or holes is much easier than the lines to start out. And with lines, I use a diamond cutting wheel for the lines and the control the slow burning cuts it makes

I process and sell the opal in my Etsy store at CursedToToil under superior opal. But I do use other inlay materials though, nothing really compares to the brilliance that Bello opal gives. My store sells 3 sizes. 0.75mm, 1.5mm, and 2.5mm. The 0.75 and 1.5mm are great for the low profile designs. The 2.5mm, if it fits looks awesome as well!

Opal is a precious gemstone. Specifically, there are multiple types of Opal both natural and manufactured. What I use is called Bello opal. It is the manufactured opal and can be found in various types of jewelry. It's value varies depending on application. So, a ring made with this inside can cost $80-$150 depending on some other factors. A ring made from a solid piece of bello opal can cost $250-$400 depending on a few factors. Primarily, there is not a lot of use of this inlay outside of small jewelry applications. This opal is produced by Sanwa Pearl Company, and they are the sole manufacturer of this opal. They produce 92 color variations, and each have stunning reflective profiles. I like to embellish my wood working projects with it and it seems to be an incredible value add for a handmade, hand engraved piece like these are. I have put lot of practice into this engraving and inlaying technique and the opal just does wonders for it. I hope to extend this out into other woodworking projects to really highlight opal for other inlay applications. Natural Opal is quite a bit different than this type of opal. Both have beautiful qualities.

I set them with CA and then flooded with CA. However, with these stones, I had to ensure that they were set deep enough to not tear them up on refinishing them. Check out the mammoth ivory one I just posted

When using the dremmal tool how deep are you cutting into the blank and once you put the crystals in which turning carbide tool are you using?

I try to keep the channel 1-2mm above the brass tube. But occasionally it goes to the tube. Then the tool is a Rikon 70-800 round carbide. The stones are a crushed opal that I sell in my Etsy store CursedToToil
