I was never considered to be good at math because I always try to do the shortcuts. All the public School instruction I received always stressed that you must "show your work". I found that to be so boring and disengaging that math became of no interest to me.

For anyone else who also got confused by how the highest common factor(divisor) is defined for complex numbers: try searching for "gaussian integers" on Google. The Wikipedia page should have enough information to fill in some gaps. Russian speakers can also search for "Канунников Применение комплексных чисел к диофантовым уравнениям", it's a pretty short video solving a similar equation and explaining in more detail how and why (Gaussian) integer complex number factorization works. I also found another Oxford KZfaq video aptly titled "Prime Time" that touches on some aspects of Gaussian integers, not necessarily related to this problem though. Hope someone finds this helpful.
