She’s trying to convince him not to do it, but he doesn’t care about being cool anymore. He’s just happy he got to experience her love. And deep down she knows it, which leads us to- “But you’re as smart as I know you are” - Steph puts herself in that “dumb cool kid” box and everyone around her solidifies it except for Pete. He sees her inherent intelligence and value as a person. She’s cool and smart. She should get to live to see it. And she’s smart enough to know that if he dies the world can be saved - it’s not a choice. AND THEN THEM PULLING AWAY AT THE END- if they kissed there’s a chance they’d go back on their decision and that can’t happen- GOD
