I've been through there hiking on the Appalachian Trail. Five of the eight NEAR bear sightings I had were within 25 miles of that spot.

@DH6771 Uh oh - gun fixated, stuck in the past wacko detected. How about just avoid bear country the way one would avoid walking around on the African veldt or swimming in waters where there are known to be alligators, and/or crocodiles, and/or sharks. Or for that matter, also avoid dangerous urban high crime areas where the prospect of getting, mugged, shot and killed is very high. It really isn't difficult, is pro-active and eliminates the need to carry a firearm. But of course we all know a lot of firearms obsessed basic people simply like carrying guns and come up with all manner of weird, wonderful and laughingly implausible reasons in which to do so.

THOSE BLACK BEARS ARE ATTACKING AND KILLING MORE AND MORE PEOPLE IN THE SMNP THESE DAYS AS THEY ARE OVERPOPULATED OBVIOUSLY SO THOSE VISITING CAN GET TO SEE THEM AS A TOURIST'S DRAW. THEY NEED TO BE THINNED OUT AND PUT THE FEAR OF MAN BACK IN THEM AGAIN.
