This is helpful!!! I found a milk crate of these cleaning out my MIL's basement! Planning a small backyard wedding next summer and I want to use these instead of floral foam. I practiced with them a little bit using flowers from the garden and it was so fun and easy! I think these really add some oomph to an arrangement, rather than just plopping them in a vase.

Wee question Julie, firstly may I say your arrangements are beautifully created. When thinking about the floristry rule of smallest flowers to the outside and larger flowers to your focal area, how does this compare to each other when doing all types of arrangements? In other words does it not apply for doing all designs? Thanks
@JulieDaviesFlowerStart

Great question Joan. The rules are there to guide you. They're a great starting point As a confident flower arranger, you can break them. With traditional arrangements the rules work well. For more modern/contemporary work you may find yourself breaking the rules more often What I would say, if you decide your arrangement needs that something else, add it! Try setting yourself a challenge. Screenshot arrangements that catch your eye online and then take a really close look - do they follow the rules, or are they rule breakers?

I love your deck chair, beautiful colours, and lovely wee pillow. You should get lots of use from it in the garden. You should get more geraniums by the springtime, my husband thinks. I kinda laughed when you went to sit in your chair. That's the way I would have sat in it, too. My fixing probably wouldn't have been as good as yours..😂

I love your lavender. I would really love to know how to care for it and which one is the mostly scented one to purchase? Is that the yarrow in your Garden too? Bindweed, spray it with a wee killer that sprays through the leaf, but it still comes so when you find out let us know too. loving your Rudbeckia flowers, so pretty. Sadly we don't have many flowers in our garden at the moment, apart from the roses.
@JulieDaviesFlowerStart

In my experience all lavender is highly scented. I think you need to decide whether you want a compact plant, or something looser. Flower head size, shape and colour also varies - so there are plenty to choose from! 💜

Hi Julie! From what you've described (your location and size) and sun exposure, I'd suggest 1-2 drarf hydrangea bushes. Once established, you'll quickly get loads of reliable blooms with minimal maintenance. Make sure to plant the right variety. Niko Blue is a lovely color but depending on your soil aciidity, may turn pink or purple. Painted ferns would also grow well into light as will all varieties of hosts. To get zinnias and other sun-loving a. Unless plants you will have to remove over hanging tree branches. Your local li rare has loads of gardening books to browse at no cost. Good luck and I'm happy to k ow that you are ot giving up on your dream. One thing, grass and gardens will compete vigorously for space, so be aware grass typically wins! Thanks for all your advice Kate (and your typo corrections). I'm starting to make and mental note of what the slugs like - which rules out hostas. I've tried again with Zinnias this summer - planting them at the sunny extremities of the garden (outside the tree canopy). They are proving very slow to get established. In fact I'd say overall, I have a very "late" flowering garden. I'll look into your hydrangea recommendation (we're on pink soil) 💐🌱💐

I actually made something similar today for our church flowers and put in a vase as church only likes to spend so much on church flowers. So I went outside into the garden and picked a few flowers from the grounds and made a hand tied bouquet for the vase and added in 1 bunch of shop bought flowers to make it look fuller in the large glass vase. no photos as in church now.
