Peter Falk has me in stitches everytime I watch this movie. He crushed it outta tge ballpark in this character. Great Bogart parody!

In Shane, Alan Ladd's voice is almost like a music score running through the movie. It's just so rich, toned, sad, gentle almost ghostly. I think his daughter said that he loved working with director George Stevens and would do anything for him. It's apparent here, as together they created what is probably the most mythic Western persona of them all.

The original intention was to make the film in Wales, have Welsh actors & extras, & made in full colour, but the UK was of course at war at the time, making that impossible. So in the end had to be made in California, & in B&W as there would have a lot of obvious natural mismatches if in colour. With the casting only Rhys Williams (who played Dai Bando) was the only true Welsh actor in this.

Both Lee Remick and Jack Lemmon are as great as can be in this absolutely amazing but downbeat film. Wish that they would have walked away with the Oscars for their respective performances.

This movie blew me away when I watched it the first time a couple of years ago. I just rewatched it and man what a wonderful little movie. What other 40s/50s movies are similar and also great like this? The Maltese Falcon, check (awesome!) ..more?

Best Hollywood Western ever made. It was filmed in 1951 and copyrighted 1952 as that is when it was scheduled for release. Paramount decided to postpone its release for the following year because they didn't want competing Westerns at the Academy Awards (HIGH NOON). Paramount was sure they would bag Best Picture for HIGH NOON...But if SHANE was also released, both films would cancel each other out and the Best Picture Oscar would go to another film. Was Paramount wrong in this decision. THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH wound up winning Best Picture of 1952. Had SHANE been released as originally scheduled, Paramount would have bagged Best Picture. Unfortunately for SHANE, it went up against the cutting edge, groundbreaking FROM HERE TO ETERNITY in 1953. Paramount lost out again.

First play in high school. I played as Dr. Sanderson. I watched the movie to help get an idea of the times and the lines. The last line is the sweetest line I’ve ever heard in cinema. In my own eyes at least.
