Absolutely legendary song and much respect to the Estonians who fought for not only their homeland but ours. There is a reason why Estonians of that time had the most Order of Lāčplēsis medals out of any other foreigners (136)

Fun fact: The melody is inspired from a Greek military march song called Thessaloniki march. This was made to commemorate the liberation of Thessaloniki during the Balkan wars of 1912-1913. The melody is also inspired from a Greek traditional wedding. Later the Russians used this melody and the march song is called March of the Motherland.

This song is such a heartfelt song written and sung by the late great Jim Radford a Cabin boy on the deep sea tug that took a harbour Block to Normandy. He was one very brave boy of 15 who became a man as soon as he saw Arranannch beach or Gold beach that day. He was one of the youngest people to go to war for our freedom. So a big thank you to Jim and the other heroes who are no longer with us RIP and to those still here again thank you for your sacrifices of eighty yrs ago

Brit: Jim was my friend for more than 20 years - when I last saw him, in Hull in 2019, I asked if I could sing this song and his reply was "That would be just fine". I sang it last night at Harrogate Folk Club and will continue to sing it around this Anniversary every year that I am able. RIP Jim 💝 EVERYONE: You can see Jim at the Royal Albert Hall singing this song - go watch 😃
