Does the always on display have a schedule timer to bring this on at a set time and to turn it off at a set time ? Or does it stay on until you switch it off do you know ?

I haven’t specifically tested it and I know it doesn’t have a specific timer but you can use Routines or focus modes.

My biggest gripe with it is Google Assistant doesn't work unless you open the phone. Other than that I really enjoy the phone.

The background is transparent. The black or white is just based on whether your phone is in dark mode or light mode. Either take the cut out and paste it on a white background on app like Canva. Or just switch to white mode and take a screenshot.
