To say that your videos are insightful and enjoyable to watch would be a gross understatement. I typically watch them more than once just to make sure I didn't miss anything. (Yeah, I'm slow). Would love to see more of this kind of content from you. Thanks.

Great video. Only thing is I'd maybe turn the music's volume lower. It's almost as if you're yelling over the piano. But again, very interesting video!

In other news, I found at a flea market someone selling a leaf from (he said) the 1400"s Book of Hours. Looking online there seem to be a lot of these available. I wonder how many might be fakes or if it could be worthwhile framing and reselling some.

I reckoned $2500, so not far off. A non-religious copy, in very good shape. Early Post-Incunable. Has a relatively famous printer. Talks about "dreams" like some of the early political philosophers like Hobbes, who came later. Has a cool woodcut, and the extra binding that's worth probably an extra few hundred.

The sun is a created thing and it points us to the Creator. The selfless love of the Creator is that He not only gave creation, but selflessly entered into creation Himself to redeem it (and us). "You have taken up my cause, O Lord. You have redeemed my life." - Lamentations 3:58 ESV

So would one make more money from this book if it were broken up & the individual pages offered for sale? I know this has been done with a number of medieval European manuscripts.

Still, $300 for a 450-year-old book is out of the price range for many people. So it is worth a lot more than, say, the average book one would find at a garage or estate sale. (Unless first editions of _Jonathan Livingston Seagull_ are worth more than I would imagine.)

Interesting. I have a couple of "Real audeincia" documents from even earlier. They're basically the First New World appellate courts, that discuss criminal and civil cases by judges at that time. But hard to gauge the value, because they're aren't many of them, especially in an appropriate auction.

Yeah, you have to pre-audtion. This means you email the producer. Telling what you have. What do you know about it. What are you looking to get. If you get accepted, you go to Las Vegas, have the item looked at, and if things go well, you go on to set, yep set. Closed set at that. It's 80 to 90% scripted "reality" TV. But when entertaining the public, you do what you gotta do.
@RareBookBuyer
@RareBookBuyer 10 күн бұрын
For me the dialog and negotiations are not scripted. So I wouldn’t say anything close to the 80-90% threshold

an added challenge when dealing with illuminated manuscripts is artistic quality too. this area of collecting rides the line between book collecting and art collecting and it takes a degree of connoisseurship to understand what is a well executed illumination or a historically important illumination vs. workshop pieces that were pumped out in mass (not that those can't also be expensive to a lesser degree). it's a fun area to collect, and you would be surprised how often quality illuminated manuscripts come up to market at reasonable/affordable prices.

Book of Hours actually contributed to the development of contemporary landscape paintings. The illuminated manuscripts obviously often contained many miniatures and smalls, depicting religious images, however, as you mentioned with the combination of the sacred and the profane, some contained miniatures with secular art, such as the cat and the mouse that you showed in the video, or miniatures detailing medieval castles and the landscape around them would appear, especially in ones commissioned for a particular individual. This in turn revitalized a subject of art that was rarely seen in Europe since the days of the Roman Empire and the soon thereafter Catholic Church’s expansion across the continent, as most new art was dedicated solely to the topic of Christianity. Also I’d just like to say thanks for giving everyone the opportunity to enter this giveaway for such an awesome prize…definitely one of the coolest giveaways I’ve ever seen!

I follow you on Instagram, .and I had no clue what a book of hours was!! I quickly looked it up. So😊 Now I do. It's a religious book that people carried to guide them with prayers and Psalms. They had little Bible story illustrations and dates of religious feasts.

Hello Mr. Weinberger, my fact submission for your contest is: "Anne Boleyn's Book of Hours that may have been with her just before her execution was discovered by a former Hever Castle steward using ultraviolet light wnd photo editing software to have been signed, secretly kept safe due to Anne's history, and passed on to female descendents for decades.

This is amazing. I've been using a modern Book of Hours (Liturgy of the Hours), but this is simply astonishing. The artwork is phenomenal. I've long coveted one like this. I find it so interesting how books were created in the middle ages, mostly by the monks, copying the words and drawing the borders from their imagination. The decorations on the border are the true selling point to me. I prefer the Byzantine style, but all are amazing.

As a seminarian in a church open to women’s ordination, I’ve found these books to be beautiful insights into the religious life of laywomen, as a majority of surviving examples are thought to have belonged to women. I’ve made my own personal prayer book (much less well decorated than your examples) and it’s so lovely to have prayers that are related to your life at hand in a book. Something I also love about the genre is the so-called “luxury” books of Hours, and how their decoration reflects the more beautiful parts of creation.

Oh my goodness, look at those pages! 😍 As a calligrapher, I've always dreamed of collecting manuscript pages and studying them. However, after watching your videos showcasing those fascinating books, I'm even more eager to learn about the script used in the gilding and the text, as well as the emotions that went into creating these works in the medieval era, despite the limited access to quality materials compared to the modern world. If I were to win this, I would be incredibly thankful for the opportunity to preserve this history and pass it on to future creative calligraphers.
