Sorry, but I have to correct you a bit. empty plate at the Christmas table is not for someone unexpected. this is an invention of the media and communists somewhere in the 60s. Usualy an extra plate was brought for the unexpected guest. an empty plate is for someone who has died. for your deceased mom, dad, grandparents, cousins or deceased children. you can not give this plate to someone who just visited you. Never.
