We used to do this a lot when we were kids. Crushed rocks mixed with water made good paste to paint with. Or flattened nails to make tiny knives.

This plane was the embodiment of compromise after compromise in the pursuit of low cost. Ultimately it swayed more customers than Lockheed's late and more expensive L-1011. But the DC-10 was a very clumsy design.

We deplane after a crash over a damaged, still spinning engine? It is 3,600 degrees and loaded with fuel, what could go wrong?
@aeromender
@aeromender Жыл бұрын
The way it works is, the pilots alert the cabin crew that they will need to evacuate the aircraft. The cabin crew are well trained to look outside to assess if the exit is clear. If the engine was on fire the pilot would alert the crew to not use exits on the left hand side of the aircraft. And if he failed to alert them, they are still trained to look first before opening the exit. Also, many emergency evacuations don’t involve engine fires. Point being that the door is there to be used if appropriate. And for an airplane that can hold up to 385 people that’s a requirement.

I know this video is old... but do you have to nudge it out the door? Isn't there a risk of it falling inwards and deploying?
@aeromender
@aeromender Жыл бұрын
Good question. It has happened that a slide does not deploy correctly. I’ve heard of a couple instances and they were due to defect or incorrect installation.
@Screamblade_
@Screamblade_ Жыл бұрын
@@aeromender Oh WOW- I wasn't expecting a quick reply haha. Thank you very much for the insight. A quick followup question though, is it similar to a painter line on a liferaft can? So it only starts the inflation process once the system falls OUT and hits the required distance.
@aeromender
@aeromender Жыл бұрын
@@Screamblade_ yes, as the slide comes off the door a lanyard is pulled which opens a valve on a cylinder full of nitrogen. The nitrogen powers a turbine which inflates the raft.

@aeromender
@aeromender 2 жыл бұрын
Oh for sure. They get sent to a shop that inspects the slide and repacks it. It’s a lot of work. Definitely not something that is done on site. We put a replacement pack back on the airplane. All aircraft slide packs have an expiration date at which point they are removed and sent in for overhaul.

Why dose it deploy right next to the engine what if it is on fire or damaged
@aeromender

Flight attendants are instructed which doors to open and when. They are trained to look out the window and ensure there isn’t a fire or other hazard before they open the door.

That has happened on airplanes before. One time we had a plane parked in Las Vegas. The doors were closed and nobody on board. One of the slides just fired off on its own. It broke the Flight attendant seat next to the door.

I wonder why the slide doesn’t pop out of the fuselage behind the wing, like on a 767, so the top of the slide is at the back of the wing and not at the door
@aeromender
@aeromender 4 жыл бұрын
The DC10 has a much narrower wing to body fairing over the wing so not enough room. That said, the overwing slide system on the 767, which I work on, is complex and notoriously sensitive and easily fired by accident. Cost to renew an overwing slide system is about $30k per side.
@lukethompson5558
@lukethompson5558 4 жыл бұрын
This slide is very dangerous, because most people will think it’s fully deployed when it’s not, and get majorly injured from jumping too early. This happens in many real-world slide evacuations
@aeromender
@aeromender 4 жыл бұрын
Luke Thompson The door slide operates as designed. Hopefully most people would see what is happening and look before they leap. That said, the DC10 is no longer operated in passenger service. Check out 10Tanker Firebomber on KZfaq. Those are impressive DC10’s.
