Thanks so much for posting that thing really flies how come no kayak paddle
@JeffRankinenAmyJoey8 ай бұрын
Although this is a one-person boat, it's still considered a canoe. The United States Canoe Association requires that a single blade paddle is used. The person I am racing is Terry Kent, former Olympic kayaker. Thanks for asking!

I'd say he was rubbing ben into all those obstacles (fair move) why do they all like to bunch up along the motorboats?

I'm a dragon boat and OC paddler. I notice that most marathon paddlers don't use any or much hinge movement. Why?
@JeffRankinenAmyJoey Жыл бұрын
For canoers, extra movement translates to inefficiency probably more than a longer boat. Sometimes a canoe can get into porpoising, an up and down movement. Efficient canoers have a slight twist instead of a forward and back motion. We focus on getting power from our core instead of our arms. Thanks for asking!

is the canoe wide high and in the middle to conform to some rules re: a canoes width?
@JeffRankinenAmyJoey2 жыл бұрын
Yes. For an 18 ft 6-in canoe the requirement is a minimum 27 inch width and a 3-in depth within one foot of center.

Not necessary to wear a PFD. It must be carried in the canoe though.

I just stumbled on these videos. I used to race open canoes through the early 70's (flat water) in the upper midwest. I was but a teen then but raced with my mother in the bow (I paddle stern). We were some of the first people to race the 18.5 foot Sawyer Champion and that lovely creature still graces my backyard. I went on to race whitewater open canoes (still paddles stern which really seemed to bother people.) in the west for a number of years. I paddled a 17.5 foot Blue Hole and then a 16.5 foot Mad River. That Mad River took me down West Water canyon at 15k fps. That also bothered the heck out of the men who felt that a small female should not be in the stern when she had a hulking male in the bow. Sorry, I get a little long winded. I just wanted to share that the sound of this video took me back. Thank you for this posting. My mother has long since passed and this just took me back to those countless races with her. I also would like to add that the tumblehome is amazing. Wow, the design these days has changed a lot.

@JeffRankinenAmyJoey7 жыл бұрын
The foam in the C2 is for mainly to take the hog out. Helps stiffen too.
@lyf45mo7 жыл бұрын
I want to know what that white thing is in the center of the C2,is that to stiffen the bottom or to take hog out.? We have had to do that with a piece of foam in several old We-No-Nahs
@lyf45mo7 жыл бұрын
I have watch quite a few video's made back east and I almost never see power boats.Believe me I have handled way worse boat ways in a V1 and when we are in a P3 big boat waves are a time to surge.
@lyf45mo7 жыл бұрын
You guys did not handle the boat waves very good,of course you already know that.
@JeffRankinenAmyJoey7 жыл бұрын
Yes. Otherwise the bottom flexes.
@lyf45mo7 жыл бұрын
Is the piece of foam stuffed under the center thwart there to stiffen the bottom of are you trying to remove hog in the old Wenonah?
@JeffRankinenAmyJoey7 жыл бұрын
Yes. Mike Fries had it made for him and Al Rudquist. My brother Steve bought it in 1986. My uncle Rich owns it now.
@lyf45mo7 жыл бұрын
Is that an OLD Crozier V1,I have only seen one other boat with that kind of a center bulk head.

SettleNow For a couple of old guys racing 20 somethings, it's always a good strategy!
@SettleNow7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I am a fellow old guy (52) racing this race vicariously from my desk, and to me up to that section it looked like you guys were hammering. I have been surprised each time a boat came up to you and keep waiting to see you haul in a boat in front of you. But don't tell me any spoilers! I will keep watching to see how it comes out. This race has been sort of on the edge of my radar, and I am starting to get a real itch to try it out....

Can you describe what is happening? Who is calling the changes and coaching? Thanks.
@JeffRankinenAmyJoey8 жыл бұрын
Hello, In the sport of canoe racing, the person in the stern (back of the canoe) calls the changes with "Hut". The changes help steer the canoe and also give a change from paddling on a particular side. Sometimes we paddle on the same side to help steer sharply. In this particular clip at the beginning, we are actually "surfing" or wake-riding on the wave of the canoe on our left. This helps us maintain our speed while paddling with about 10% less effort. Hope that makes sense! Thanks for asking!
@akennyd8 жыл бұрын
Many thanks for the reply!! I've watched quite a few of your videos...thanks for posting them, I've enjoyed them!! Yes, I had heard or read that one could ride the wake of another boat and had wondered about that. I race bicycles on the amateur level and canoe for recreation. I would race them probably if I lived on the water and could train without driving to the water. Thanks again and I hope you post more.
