Right off the bat, I really like the way Gary walks through the door (0:00). In 0.5x speed you can just barely make out the shift from embarrassment to excitement on his face. You can clearly tell that just before walking through the door, he tripped on a pebble and fell on the shrubs in front of his house. And if you zoom in, you will see a leaf from a Baby Gem Boxwood in his hair (not sponsored). Really nice attention to detail there. I love how his anticipation for the celebration of his anniversary overpowered his embarrassment from the fall. Gary is a clumsy guy, he makes mistakes, but it doesn’t matter because his love for his longtime girlfriend is *so* strong. You can feel the deep adoration in his voice when he calls out for Mary. It moved me to tears. By the way he looks into the other room at 0:02, You can also tell that he has big plans for his girlfriend. He’s been at work all day in the office, itching to get home to Mary so he can cook her a nice pasta (not spaghetti, yuck) dinner. When Gary sees the note, he knows something is up. This isn’t the first time Mary has left him a note. The last note she left was about his barber, Fernaldo. Fernaldo always gave fantastic bird-related advice when he cut Gary’s hair. Going to the barber was the highlight of Gary’s day because he had a tumultuous relationship with a robin named Britt who liked to sit on his windowsill at 5:00 am (the early bird gets the worm amirite?). One day, Fernaldo decided to get up from his rocker and leave for Puerto Rico. Shortly after, the bird also flies away, to Puerto Rico, with Fernaldo. Devastating. Gary refused to get out of bed for two weeks. So you can only imagine how hard it must be for him to see another note, only a month after the last heartbreak. I mean, just the way his voices trails off when he says “anniversar…” gave me chills (0:03). Then he picks up the note (0:05). The way Gary reads the note in his head imitating his girlfriend’s voice, instead of hearing Mary’s actual voice, is a very intriguing artistic decision. The viewer gets to hear, first hand, Gary’s perception of how his girlfriend treats him. The way he reads his own name is very revealing (0:09). You can tell that Mary only says Gary’s name to express shock when he has done something goofy. You get the sense that Mary has said “Gary” that way, at least once, when he accidentally dropped her necklace down the garbage disposal, and decided to try to fish it out with his own hand. The necklace was ultimately a lost cause and Gary has been trying to replace it for years. But something always goes wrong. Flat tires, rotten eggs, smashed pumpkins, you name it. Some day, Gary will replace it. Some day. Also, pay attention to where he tucks his girlfriend’s note into his jacket pocket (0:27). Right over his heart, awwwww. Then the vocals begin (0:31). Stunning. Absolutely chilling. The fact that Gary looks at himself in the mirror when he says the phrase “I reflect on my reflection” (0:31). Genius. Interestingly, he looks at the camera when he asks “am I a man?” (0:48). Gary struggles with self-confidence, he doesn’t believe that he can find the answer within himself, so he directs the question to the viewer. He wants *us* to tell him if he’s a man or a muppet. But we won’t. He looks back at the mirror and sees himself in his muppet form (0:53). Everyone has a muppet within them. Most people would argue “that’s not true Nadine, stop.” They would say that the journey Gary takes to discover he truly is a man, and not a muppet, is exactly what this song is about. But that’s because they haven’t seen themselves in their muppet form. We can only see ourselves in our muppet form when our longtime girlfriends named Mary cause us to have an identity crisis. Notice how Gary’s muppet has blue hair. That’s because Gary accidentally dyed his hair blue in fourth grade. The bottle said shampoo, but his brother, Yrag, had pulled a silly little prank on him. He was the one that filled the bottle with dye. Now, the blue hair on his muppet will forever symbolize his brother’s torment of him. At 0:59 we can see the muppet come into frame next to Gary. That was intentional. As Gary continues to sing the song, he starts to think of his manhood and his muppethood as separate entities, instead of one entity. The brief appearance of the muppet next to him, physically shows that shift in his thought process. When the next muppet comes into frame, the viewer is once again stunned by the vocals, and can’t help but sing along (1:17). Notice how this muppet is a new muppet. It’s not Gary’s muppet. The viewer can only assume that this new muppet is named Walter. Notice how Walter wears glasses, but they don’t cover his eyes (1:18). This muppet has style. When he sings the phrase “I look into these eyes,” we can only see his glasses, not his eyes (1:19). That’s hilarious. Woah. “insi-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-ide” (1:27). I replayed that lyric 23 times. Incredible. When the snow clears and Walter’s man form is revealed, the viewer is left shaking in their boots (1:40). Look at the lighting, look at that stare. Terrifying. The deep vocals. It rocks all of us to the core. You thought Walter was a teddy bear. No. He just unleashed his inner demon. At 2:06 it’s suddenly daytime again. That’s because the creators wanted to illuminate the muppets’ beauty in natural lighting. I stan. The harmonies! *chef’s kiss*. In the next scene the muppets don’t say anything, they just jiggle (2:16). The energy is at an all time high, they are preparing the viewer for the grand finale. The finale does not disappoint. The falling snow, the projection, the vocals, the harmonies, I’m bawling (2:20). Especially 2:27 - 2:30. Wow wow wow. The stare at 2:32, I love how they stay true to character to give the viewer nightmares. The smile at 2:36, so wholesome. Omg the bite (2:46) and the kiss too (2:47). I’m loling so hard right now. THE SECOND KISS HAHHAHAHHAHHAHHAH (3:04). Overall, not overall, every second actually, really good. 100/10 would recommend.
