Like the other European liberal empires, the French analysed and understood the cultural problems of the foreign peoples that they administered. The fact that the officer corps of the Southern Vietnamese army practiced authoritarianism, factionalism and corruption demonstrates that the French were right in not heeding Théophile Pennequin’s advice to create a Vietnamese national army. European imperialism is far more nuanced than most people realise.

Bonne continuation ! Nettempereur

think of the British units that had to fight to the end at Dunkirk to make it possible for 150,000 French soldiers to escape. These troops decided they wanted to return via Calais in order to surrender. The brave Kieffer Commando company of 4 Commando were part of the few who decided to continue the fight against the Nazis.
@NettempereurАй бұрын
35,000 French troops defended Dunkirk to the end and were eventually captured. I don't see how British troops could break the encirclement of Dunkirk to go to Calais which had already surrendered on May 26, as the battle of Dunkirk just started (May 26 - June 4). I will need you to be more specific please, and please mind chronology in your explanations.
@victornewman9904Ай бұрын
@Nettempereur Exactly. They had to fight on, until the 100,000 UK troops plus 150, 000 French could be saved. The majority of French were returned to Calais. Calais was also held to the end by UK troops after the return of French troops via Calais. The UK 51st Division fought on whilst the French surrendered.
@NettempereurАй бұрын
Dynamo operation allowed to save 198,000 British troops, 123,000 French troops and 16,800 Belgian troops). I don't know where you found 100k UK and 150k French figures, these are incorrect. I don't understand how you imply that Allied troops could go back and forth from Calais to Dunkirk as both cities were encircled. The 51st (Highland) Division did not fight in the Dunkirk Pocket. After Dynamo, it defended the Somme river and then Normandy (in 1940 I mean) alongside the French and they evacuated most of their men from the little harbour of Saint Valery-en-Caux. Some French and British stayed till the end and were forced to surrender (together), including Major-General Fortune (one of the most senior British officers to be taken prisoner in the war). Please check before you answer next. Anyone trolling here is systematically banned and his/her comments are deleted. Take care.

I fought in Afghanistan alongside the French army, and I can tell you that they are great fighters and they have an effective army... the Taliban greatly feared the French army, and the foreign legion and French special forces... I'm not saying that because my wife is French and my children are French-American, I really mean it. They have a very well-trained and professional army, endowed with formidable tactical efficiency. if the French are deployed in Ukraine, the Russians will quickly understand that they are real fighters... the Russians are numerous but do not have 10% of the operational efficiency of the French army, and of Western technology. respect to our French allies, an American Marines USMC...🇺🇲🇫🇷

Strength comes and goes. In WW1, American troops in 1917 were trained and equipped by French soldiers. Nowadays, French troops are following NATO combat procedures which are mostly US concepts. There is never "never" in History. France has existed for 1,500 years, we have experienced being the top player several times, we have also experienced disaster several times. We are still here.
