What makes this scene funny to an amateur military historian is: the land being talked about in this scene is more or less in the location which on June 15, 1859 - the Pig War would be fought between the United States and British forces - a light hearted cold war which both sides brought ships and soldiers to contest the islands and where the border should be. When it became clear what the cause was and the people involved - both governments were.....embarrassed and the involved people more or less were politically destroyed -- except George Pickett who was a witness to the events if anything.

Even though I love this scene, the best part is watching that blonde guy's face go from incredibly smug to "ooohhhh fuck" in the space of 3 seconds 🤣. Can't recommend this show enough, really hope they make a second series

tom hardy has the ability to become the scariest person on screen in a split second, yet in real life he appears to be such a kind mannered and intellegent person, how naturally talented do you have to be as an actor to make even the audience shit their pants with nothing but a look? Bravo man, simply brilliant

Hardy is absolutely the heir to the mantles of Day Lewis and Oldman. He is one of the greatest actors of his time, and he shows it all here in this scene- intelligence, cunning, disdain for arrogance and self control even when feeling in a barely held in fury. Brilliant

Made-up PC nonsense so that someone of today's woke sensibilities can fantasize about projecting himself into the past. I was born in Vancouver. It was not the road to China in 1812 because that was long before railroads. Nootka Sound was not owned by one man. The issue of contention between Britain and the US over the region was fur trading and resource rights. The North West Company sent the great British explorer David Thompson in a race to the mouth of the Columbia River, now called Astoria, Oregon, by land from Alberta. He lost out to the American Pacific Fur Company's sea expedition, but the British claimed the territory anyway on the basis of Thompson's navigation of the entire river. The real history is much more interesting than this Marxist, Imperial-bashing fantasy.

The show uses the Nootka Crisis as inspiration and makes no attempt to actually be historical about it because the real Nootka Crisis is way way too complicated and confusing for a TV show.... There WAS a big and important territorial dispute, but it's not US-vs-UK, it's SPAIN vs UK vs USA vs Canada's First Nations w/ France, and Russia, as interested parties and Nootka is important because it changed how European colonisers believed they could legally claim sovereignty over territory. ("If you don't move [a bunch of colonists in and start building stuff], you lose it). Even the POPE was involved. The line about "gateway to China" is super badass but historically you should think about it the other way around: in 1790-1820, the British had trading ships based in China that would sail to Vancouver Island, pick up furs, and sell those in China. In the show's timeline, the East India Company still had its monopoly to BUY in China and SELL in the UK, but one year earlier (in 1813) it had just lost its monopoly with India. Delany's (fictional) intent here is to establish legal rights to trade furs FROM Vancouver Island, TO China. The EIC wants to dominate the fur trade into China. There is a LOT of Chinese involvement on VI in the late 1790s - ships were registered in Macau to dodge the EIC monopoly, and Chinese guys crewed on British ships. There were Chinese workers on Vancouver Island from at least the 1780s, and "shipping furs from VI to China and getting incredibly rich" was basically a cliche by 1800 thanks to a dude called James Hanna.

I remember watching this for the first time & thinking about the nuances of Tom Hardy's performance, particularly the grunting and the reaction on his face when his father's unstable mind is mentioned and he is told to open the envelope. Captivating.

The series on Amazon Hulu and Netflix are incredible and Tom Hardy in Taboo and Peaky Blinders is better than any dogsh@t comic book movies in the last 6-7 yrs. I can’t believe it’s been 5 yrs already and hardly everyone has even heard of them. Peaky Blinders is over also. I hope the movie is better than the sopranos prequel. They could’ve squeezed another 2-3 seasons out of PB. It was just getting even better every episode.

SPANISH EMPIRE: Are we a joke to you? No seriously, the Nootka Crisis of 1798 was OUR thing, WE arrested British captains and seized ships, we claimed sovereignty over Vancouver Island and established the first European settlement in British [spits] Columbia at Santa Cruz de Nuca ... on Nootka Sound!
