Illinois is the biggest dump on Earth. If you ever feel compelled to sit on the only beach in Chicago thats worth going to which is still very mid (North Ave), stare at a bean for countless hours and hope you dont get shot while doing so or visit a fountain that gets vandalized constantly, youre only a plane ride away from paradise lol. Most people cant afford any kind of recreation in illinois anymore and the middle class will eventually be wiped out. The amount of millennials and gen Z that truly think sitting in hours of traffic so they can go home to a mediocre house that eats away at more than half of their income to sit around and watch Netflix until its time to wake up and do it all over again is ridiculous. The only people that are truly "living/thriving" in illinois are the upper class, the rest are merely surviving. Whats the point of all of these supposed immennities that pathetic excuse they call a "world class city" has if no one can afford to use them? Plus people are leaving in droves for the suburbs too so eventually most of those will go to crap too. Moved to texas 2 years ago and i have never been happier in my life. Keep your liberal hellhole and have fun giving all your money to a state that doesnt work while dodging bullets 👍🏻

This topic was relevant to me. Once moving from Chicago to suburbs at about 10 yrs old, I lived mostly in the western suburbs. Glendale Hts, Wheaton, Lombard, etc. In '99 when purchasing 1st home, I got much more bang for my buck west side of Joliet where I currently reside. I was quite happy here, especially with the many, many trails Will County has. However, the changes in the past 4-5 yrs has found me struggling with wanting badly to get out of here. I would be very interested in your opinion of the Joliet are. I don't see any of your posts covering Joliet. Any chance you will?

Yeah, nice job to the family talking shit about people are in families. That’s what you’re doing. However, the reason people leave Illinois is because of the politicians here and the taxes here they keep going up services. Keep going down to governments out of control mainly JB Pritzker people for people like him Kim Fox, Brandon Johnson all pieces of garbage leftover shit from a different era of shit that’s why people are leaving Illinois. They’re disgusted with these goofballs.

I live in Mokena from 1979 until 1989. Nobody rode around on horses except the people that had farms. The property taxes have always been ridiculously high in Mokena is low. My sister pays who still lives in care more than 10,000 and the house is not valued over 550,000 closer to 12,000 a year maybe a little bit more Living in City Of Chicago I have two houses yes the crime is high here. Think about this. How many policeman do you think compared to Chicago when the crane comes out to Mina because of all the migraines you will not have the right amount of police for the population. I remember when I moved to Mina there were two policeman that was it. I will never go back toMokena. I will leave the state before I go back to Mokena.

Career opportunities are spoiled in a blue state by the high taxes and high regulation. That's the #1 reason, and it's due to the Democratic politicians.

Property taxes, liberal politics, dense population and other taxes are the main reasons we are leaving. This state has their hands deep in its residents pockets and we are tired of it. We're both in our 50's, will be early retired and we're born and raised here. Plus, the first time I seen Colorado, Wyoming, Arizona, I fell in love with the scenery have been a flat lander all our life.

I recently moved to the western suburbs from the city. I only plan on living here for a handful of years and the moving out when I’m able to. The high cost of living here really doesn’t seem worth it. Now we have all these weird pro-criminal laws like some kind of rotten cherry on top.

Taxes and fees are crazy in Chicago. I can throw a Frisbee into Chicago but haven't been downtown in over eight years. On another note, over the last ten years or so I have taken an informal poll of the people I meet. I question any one I see in uniform (Police, Fire, City, County or State Workers, etc.): When you retire, are you staying in the area? One person in ten years stated they were staying, everyone else said no and they would leave (of course taking their pension with them). The gentleman who is staying, stated he has a severely disabled family member who needs constant care. So, the rest are leaving and taking their pension money with them, a further drain on city, county and state tax revenue.

Illinois is going to be clobbered by tax increases after the November elections. They already increased by 1 billion on July 1, 2024. Being a sanctuary state costs a lot. Run amok crime. There are other reasons, but these three will emerge as the biggest soon.

Number one reason Illinois families are leaving this State is Democrats. All they have done is make bad decisions. Everything they do makes life more expensive and harder for families to afford this place anymore. The amount of government corruption in this State and its Judicial system is staggering. You need to earn a whole lot more than $100K per year to live here comfortably.

I agree that Democrats are doing nothing to lower the property taxes. My problem with your comment is it's too simplistic. Republicans aren't doing anything either. My suburb is run by Republicans. They feed at the same taxpayer subsidized buffet as the Democrats. If Republicans actually wanted property tax reform they would do something. They aren't interested.

Why you hiding the main reasons they leaving, yes its true leaving because move closer to family, the same family that just moved out of illinois, then you say jobs, yes jobs have left because of high taxes...but when you look at past comments its always corruption and weather along with it,this is just attention getter so you can help people move from illinois so you can move to florida, this whole country will be moving to florida to escape the brutal midwest winters that are getting worse, anyone can live in warm areas by the ocean, that means no high heating bills and free ocean food, this whole corrupt government needs to back off and let us live, this government mostly caters to the rich because they pay lobbyist...so white people get together and take over the whole florida state because we dont have many warm areas to survive in run others back to they own warm islands that we are not allowed to go to or feel safe in,this is getting bad

I currently live in Plainfield IL in a duplex. My property taxes are $7000/year. They just went up. An equivalent sized property in NW Indiana has taxes of $3500/yr. Even if I had to pay the $1500 extra for still working in Illinois, I would still be ahead in that category. One thing to think about is the taxes in Illinois keep going up, as more businesses and people leave every year. They are upside down on their pension obligation by billions. There are other factors like utility costs and the price of licensing cars in Indiana. Right now, for me, it’s probably a wash, but I will probably stay at least two more years until my son graduates high school.

When you file your IN income tax return, you get credit for your IL state income taxes already paid but you'll still have to pay the amount attributable to the county level income tax in full because there is no local income tax in IL to offset that portion. For example, if you live in Lake County IN and work in IL and make $100K AGI per year, you'll pay an additional $1,500 due to the 1.5% local income tax levied by Lake County.
