Goes to show that that song needs all of the different instruments to make it what it is. A masterpiece isn’t made by just a master but by all the different instruments mastered and combined to make perfection

As a teacher of all band and orchestra instruments, I wish I knew more about pitch adjustment techniques on low brass, when to use and not use the triggers on the larger trombones, transitioning students from a small tenor trombone to larger trombones and even baritone and tuba, and the fundamentals of playing larger brass instruments that might or are different from playing their smaller instrument cousins. My beginning band director helped me a great deal when I switched from Alto to Baritone saxophone over 40 years ago and those lessons have stayed with me to this day. Band directors who are not low brass players need the basics to make transitioning students easier. Thank you for the update and the question. Keep us posted on the educational side of your plans here and it would be great if M4 got together for another video. You guys had such a great sound and great arrangements. Thank you.

I am new to the trombone. But, in any area, I like to think about the philosophical, or the "why" issues, and it always comes back to being grateful to God for the gift of His creation, and for the forgiveness He offers through the Lord Jesus Christ. When will we die? We don't know, but we need to be prepared for it. We will die, and then we will be judged. All our attitudes and actions. Did we seek to please ourselves, or to give God glory? Thanks for your music!

Thanks for the update! So having played for more years than I remember, mouthpiece selection or at that, even horn selection (f-trigger, tenor, large bore tenor, etc) has never come up as part of education. I just kept trying different mouthpieces until it "worked". But I wish my teacher back in high school taught us where different mouthpieces are appropriate for different parts, music, range, etc. Fundamentals. I was given a horn with the stock mouthpiece and just winged it.

Welcome back! After returning to the Metroplex I've met up with and played with Alex Dubrov a couple of times. Over the years, I've met a lot of students who had been inspired by y'all for sure!

I was fortunate enough to have pretty good music education growing up. But I never REALLY developed my ear until college, just kinda got by. Fine tuning each note on each partial is a skill I wish more of the people I play with in community groups knew how to do, and not just the bones, but tuba/euph as well. Also, wish one of my teachers had had the talk with me about pushing in my tuning slide and adjusting my embouchure differently with some Caruso exercises to really develop my sound. That came way too late for me.

Something I've been thinking about since I started teaching lessons is what motivates us to play. I think there's a lot of goals that become obvious once you reach a certain level, but it can be hard to close that gap, or find things to work on in the interim. I try to transcribe something each of my students will have fun playing, since I remember being motivated early on to play things like Hedwigs Theme, or Somewhere Over the Rainbow, even when I didn't have a lot of direction otherwise. I also think it's extremely important to get a student's playing into a place where it's comfortable, and relatively tension-free early on, because that so profoundly affects the experience of playing. I didn't pick up as many bad habits as some people do, but I still had a lot of things to re-learn once I got to college, and only then discovered how comfortable I could feel while playing. If only we all grew up with teachers that were able to keep us honest in those domains. Everything feels so much better when you 1 - play more often, 2 - eliminate unnecessary tension, and 3 - simplify your approach to the instrument. That's been my experience, at least.

as opposed to general playing tips, I'd love to hear the thought processes that you've taken on and utilized throughout your time in the One O' Clock/M4/studying with Vern & Jan/etc!

As a proud tuba player, I often found a proficient adeptness to pick up the correct keys to the songs I listened to. I could pick up my instrument and follow along up until I couldn't hear the bass line anymore. Also something I took for granted as a teenager is both Cardio and proper breathing exercises. We use higher volumes of air to create our sound. So it's important to keep up the breathing.

I'm dumfounded by improvisation. Other than learning blues scales and playing any notes in that scale, what are the next couple baby steps? Do I need to seriously study music theory so I can decode new chords every measure or two? Are there other scales you can play over certain chord patterns? Thanks!!
@johnspence5689
@johnspence5689 Ай бұрын
You pretty much have to understand the theory of the piece/song or else you’re just noodling around with no clue where to go. You can do it without theory, but it’s much harder, especially once the solos go outside of the blues.

One thing that I never was taught was tonguing. Like, music teachers don't really go over what happens in the mouthpiece past buzzing, so when I was in an ensemble an was told "We mostly do 'Dah' tonguing", I lacked the context to know what that meant I should do.
