Its depressing, run down. Market is shameful. Only shops open are phone shops, greggs, an argos, second hand shops. Asda and morrisons . I would rather shop in sunderland and newcastle

I could sit and listen to adopted geordie, John Grundy, Talk all day.

As a person with a long time link with South Shields as my father was born and grew up there until he served in the Navy during the second world war.In 1945 he came down to Chatham Dockyard on the last ship he was a Chief Petty Officer on.There he met my Mum-romance bloomed following a fancy dress ball at the dockyard.After getting married in 1946 mum and dad started a family.Every so often but not every year we had family holidays in South Shields.We stayed with Nan at her house in Madeira Terrace near Westoe Bridges.Highlights of the holidays as a youngster was donkey rides on the beach,walking along mile-end pier as it was known then,the laughing sailor amusement in the arcade near the beach,riding on the trams connected to overhead cables,an early trip on the ferry to North Shields to see the fish caught come in to be sold.Best of all was going to South Park,having an ice cream in a sundae dish at Minchellas in Ocean Road.Fish and chip suppers were a real treat in South Shields.Returning to South Shields with my husband since 2013 we have seen some of the changes being made to the sea front,the leisure centre and hopefully will be able to return to see some more major changes.We love Staying at the Britannia guest house in Julian Avenue.Favourite places to eat at are Mambos, Tuscanos.Both Italian restaurants that give a warm welcome.Coleman's fish restaurant for a delicious treat especially lemon sole,cod or scampi with chips and of course mushy peas.Also we like to go to the Wouldhave restaurant for a hearty tasty meal.Of course we have to go to Minchellas.We enjoy listening to the Karaoke and playing bingo with dear friends at the Royal British Legion club in Queen Street.Greenwoods is always a port of call when we are in South Shields as are Boots,Lloyds bank,Post office on Fowler Street.We are always given a warm welcome on our return trips.Yes we have been at the finishing line of the Great North Run to see Mo Farah win twice and he came in second the first year we were in South Shields for the Great North Run.Not forgetting when we are in South Shields we meet up with my cousin Steven and his wife Gloria for a catch up.Fingers crossed health issues allowing we will return in June 2016.👍👋👌

The statue of Captain Annand VC is amazing. An excellent video. South Shields Town Hall is a magnificent building and John Grundy is a fantastic presenter and historian.

South Shields Town Hall is a 'must see' place to visit on Heritage Open Days. The guided tours are free and very popular with the locals, as well as visitors to the town.
