Beautiful arrangement and playing! To me it brings out more complex feeling on the lute, like you've uncovered something that was hiding beneath the surface. I love it.

Truly magical. There is a certain clarity between the voices that comes with a 10 course renaissance lute and, of course, there is your considerable skill and musicianship. Question, have you modified your right-hand technique to bring your thumb forward…? Is this your technique change when playing a 10 course…? Beautiful piece of music. I must look for the French tab and try to copy your tone on my borrowed 10 course.

Fun fact, a by the time the baroque came around and in the late renaissance most people were playing thumb out - even Dowland himself played later in his life thumb out towards the bridge. I don't know why more people don't do renaissance music thumb out towards the bass because it gives a really present sound and needs to rely far less on great microphones. It's actually REALLY rare you see late renaissance music played as it was probably played because people seem to get fixated on the thumb in.

Realy fine! Something in the blend of your two sounds has fallen into place. Not that it was bad before, but this is a new echelon. You're combining into not one timbre, but one *resonance*. It's very beautiful.

Nicely done. Again the dueling thumb positions! What does Brandon have on the nut, looks to be the second or third course?

Thanks! I think it was just a shim of some sort to raise the string a bit.

This lute piece always makes me want to cry. It starts with such melancholy, but as it progresses, it becomes a little less sad, then it comes back with the melancholic theme and ends with it. I consider Capirola among the most sensitive composers of the italian Renaissance. It was a pleasure to hear it again. Congratulations to Cameron.

It is an absolute gem of the repertoire, and a pleasure to play. Thank you for watching!

How do you guys decide whether to play thumb over like Brandon or thumb under like you? Do the manuscript tell you how to play?
@CameronWelke2 жыл бұрын
Great question! The manuscript doesn't give any indication for thumb over vs. thumb under - we each are just playing with the technique that we're more comfortable with. Personally, I play thumb under whenever I'm playing on a smaller Renaissance lute like this, regardless of the rep. Once I'm playing on a lute with 9 courses or more, I'll usually switch to thumb out.

This brings me back to the days when the “renaissance lute duets“ by Odette and Lindberg came out on CD in the late 80s. This music is just as fresh today as it was back then.

Your performances of La Rossignol, The Flatt Pavan and now The Galliard are second to none. The tempos, timing and sound are perfect. And, because you have tuned to A= 415 - the same pitch I use - I can play along with you - well Brandon’s part. The runs in Cameron’s part require a bit more practice at this tempo….🥴 Thank you both for this superb performance.

In the key of E? ! THAT LAST CHORD !
@davidbyron3772 жыл бұрын
The final chord is F major. But as they are tuned down a semitone, compared to modern pitch, you correctly hear E.🤔
