Robbie Ross was worth a hundred of Douglas. He was the one who stayed loyal to Wilde after he was imprisoned, and stayed with him after he was released. Ross was with Wilde when he died in Paris, and then spent years of his life working as Wilde's literary executor. He was the one who fought to acquire the rights to Wilde's work and give them over to his sons, long after Douglas had distanced himself from Wilde and abandoned him in the last years of his life. Say what you will about Oscar, but he picked the wrong man to love most.

Mah..mi sorge qualche dubbio a tal proposito..

Oscar Wilde reminds me of Donald Trump. Trump could have spared himself the 2024 New York trial if he had chosen not to run for office and just retired to a quiet life after all the backlash he dealt with from day one as president. But he put his ego above every other consideration. Wilde could have ignored what the Marquis said about him and Alfred and run off to a deserted island but he was desperate for attention and saw the courtroom as a stage to show off. They both needed taken down a peg or two.

You could write an entire play from the recorded transcript of this cross examination. Carson, a barrister and a hardline unionist, was deeply affected by this case. When subsequently asked by the crown to prosecute Wilde he declined and advised against there being a prosecution at all. He felt Wilde had been destroyed by the civil trial and it was inhuman to pursue him further. The movie unfortunately concatenates the legal proceedings but it’s well worth reading in full the transcript of Carson’s cross examination of Wilde, which is free online

It was. Though wilde wasn't tried for buggery, he was tried for "gross indecency". I believe the punishment for buggery was much harsher than the one for gross indecency

Who wouldn't love Robbie. Robbie was the sweetest man, and the real Robbie was also good-looking. and he was genuinely loving and caring to Oscar, but tried to discipline Oscar and was always concerned about his love and sex life, financial situation and alcohol and drug use. His wish was for Oscar to have a normal romantic life and not get into abusive relationships all the time or sleep with whomever he fell into. and he was obviously happy for Oscar when he met Maurice (he was 30-35 years old and an ex-Marine). Robbie said he was very grateful to him for being so kind and gentle with Oscar. Despite being very much in love with him, he put his feelings aside for the sake of Oscar. Robbie came out to his family when he was 18, and Oscar described him as the princess of the family. He was the youngest, the most vulnerable, and extremely sensitive: he was known to cry all the time about literally everything, and on top of that, he was gay. His family always protected him at all costs, and he often went to his mama to cry (often because of Oscar).

If Oscar Wilde had lived around the modern era, it would’ve been completely different. Homosexuality is more accepted nowadays and isn’t criminalised as it was back then, but there can be some who don’t accept it I have to be honest. It’s a loud noisy world we live in.

It must’ve been very humiliating for Oscar Wilde having shouts of abuse from people in the court corridor and getting spat at while being dragged to prison, all because he got done for being gay as Homosexuality was criminalised at the time and his reputation ruined. I always thought that Stephen Fry and Oscar Wilde have many similarities...in terms of their appearance and that they are both homosexuals. Also, they are both multi-talented and are knowledgable on different disciplines. Also their style of clothing is similar. I even thought that maybe Stephen Fry is the reincarnation of Oscar Wilde. Or maybe Stephen Fry admires Oscar Wilde and is inspired by his work.
