I'm just starting my nutrition coaching business and this video was INCREDIBLE! I'm so grateful that I found your page. I am doing nutrition coaching through my employer, the YMCA (I am also a fitness instructor). I am using Practice Better to keep everything in order in hopes after a few years I'll branch out on my own. Do you find this is the best platform? Thank you!

I do think you can ask friends and family for referrals, so I'm thinking more along the lines of acquaintances, colleagues, friends of friends vs your close inner circle. Hope that makes sense.

This video should be labeled "for beginners". I was looking for ideas on creative marketing for low to no cost, but I'm not a beginner, I've been coaching for over 5 years....

Awesome Jo sounds like you have a solid foundation of skills and marketing. This video was really meant to clarify some confusion about how to market yourself as an expert but not show up as one when you are actually coaching clients.This is a real dilemma for health coaches because we’re taught on the marketing side to present ourselves as experts in a health condition or health topic, but then in our coach training we’re taught that we are not a medical expert and not to give advice or recommendations. That is what I hoped to clarify in this video.

Thank you for your video Michelle I just had a question you stated at the end of the video that you Remembered all of the health and Wellness numbers and when you got to the exam you've wrote down all the Health and Wellness numbers can you explain what that means I'm currently in a course but I have no idea what you're talking about
@michellemaclean19 күн бұрын
When you go to the exam, they give you some paper and so you are able to jot some things down before you start the exam. This is helpful for all the things you have memorized, like the numbers. I wrote them down got them out of my mind and then was able to refer to the numbers when a related question appeared on the exam. Hope that helps to clarify.

So other than being able to work in clinical setting, what is the benefit of being board certified? Is it that you are able to accept health insurance from clients if you were to go into private practice??

Thanks Michelle this is really helpful. I was wondering how many notes you take during a session?
@michellemaclean3 ай бұрын
I personally take a lot of notes but I think everyone has to find their own style and what works for them. To me it's about remembering what the client said. It's not for the purpose of transcribing and sending it back to the client. They should also be taking notes.

While certification can provide credibility and expertise, it's not always a strict requirement. However, ensuring you have proper training and knowledge is essential for providing quality care as a health coach. What's your take on certification versus experience in this field?
@michellemaclean4 ай бұрын
For me, since there are so many folks calling themselves health coaches with a weekend course or selling products, I'm a fan of certification to bring credibility, educational standards and a clear scope of practice to our field.

I’ve heard that we can say metaphors instead of giving advice and I’ve also heard that we can say oh there was a client of mine that had this experience blah blah blah.. and I’ve also heard that we can get factual things which you mentioned What do you think the best approach would be to start with? Metaphor, and if that doesn’t work, then factual information or other ? I know it’s a long question but I just wanted to check😀🙏
@religion-free4 ай бұрын
hi, you heard?
@michellemaclean4 ай бұрын
Just to clarify a metaphor isn't advice it it more about comparing one thing to another to provide clarification. The first approach in coaching is to elicit from the client what they know, what ideas they have etc, then offer a small bit of educational type content, and then elicit again from them what they think of the info and then ask if there's something they'd like to do with that new info. And as always we ask permission before we offer information or educate. Hope that helps.

Thanks Michelle. Loving your videos, you explain so nicely and dont talk too fast! Can I ask, if we cant actually prescribe or do meal plans, what do you say to clients about actual food to eat and how to stick to healthy eating if you are a nutrition coach solely?
@michellemaclean4 ай бұрын
If you are an RD or nutritionist then that would be a completely different scope of practice. I recorded another video on what we can talk to our clients about when it comes to food . You can check it out here. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b7V4rMip3t2YYY0.html

Hey April, this is what I teach in my courses. I provide a 6-page wellness vision workbook, teach how to do coach-based discovery sessions and provide a roadmap of structure for your coaching program. My next one is coming up on May-June 2024. I'd love to have you join us. You can get on the waitlist here www.gethealthcoachskills.com/
