A great thing about homeschooling is that we get to pick and choose which curriculum we use according to our kid's interests and abilities.

@@brookelynette3thank you! Also, I wonder why they recommend testing a grade up if you test at the end? I’m testing for the grade level my child just completed. That’s a bit odd to me.

@@luv4all43 I tried to find an explanation from the website and cannot. The first year I ordered from Chrisian Liberty and their website does instruct you to test for the grade they will be entering next, but doesn't explain why. I've always assumed it is because if they have completed most or all of, for example 4th grade, then they should be ready to understand 5th grade questions.
@luv4all43
@luv4all43 Ай бұрын
@@brookelynette3 thank you! I contacted someone and I still really didn’t get an explanation on why lol. They said it’s just a recommendation and not a requirement for you to go a grade up, but check with your state is all they said. NC says test each academic year so, I don’t want to skip a grade to test.😑

This sounds like the same situation with my son! He just finished his 9th Grade and struggled with Algebra 1, but for him he started this year with Denison Math for Algebra 1! He was more than half way when we switched to teaching textbooks! Denison Math is a great curriculum but for my son he struggled to understand the way the lessons were explained the Denison method way for the longer Algebra formulas, he was not doing well at that point. So we switched over toward the end of the school year and he really felt a huge relief with using teaching textbooks and understood the lessons much better. I would say that each child learns differently so it would be difficult to know if Denison Math would be a good fit for your child! But I think I should have choose the success option for him when I purchased the curriculum maybe you can look into that one for her if you choose to go with Denison Math.

Thanks so much for your insight! I'm really struggling with this decision. I looked at the Sucess version info and I think it would be good since my daughter struggles with ADHD, but I'm scared of it being too simple. I really have nothing against TT. Both my girls want to continue with it. Ugh! Lol I've got a few weeks to figure it out!

I've order from Academic Excellence that last couple years. They run sales a few times a year. I'd almost say we are year round too except for about a 5 week Summer break. If you haven't already, check with you state about when you can register your homeschool. Some states only allow registration during certain months even if you plan to start in a different month.

As far as the timing of each pace- I often hear that you should give 15 days for each pace, but this doesn't build in a study day before the test. Do most families not do a study day?
@brookelynette3
@brookelynette3 Ай бұрын
I will have my kids take a day for studying if I think they need it. Each pace has 3 check ups and a self test before the main test. For my kids, the little bit of studying before each of these is sufficient in order to take the main test.

Hi and thank you for the video. As I understand the learning is independent, but still the parents needs to check the tests and do extra learning for the mistakes- it requires a parent involved day-to-day. What made you choose this off-line programme over on-line one?
@brookelynette3
@brookelynette3 2 ай бұрын
I guess I'm old fashion in the fact that I like my kids to have an actual textbook. Other pros for us is not being dependent on having internet access, less screen time and its usually less expensive than online courses. We do math online, but other than that we use textbooks.

As an Abeka user, here's my two cents. My son doesn't get much history education in school, so I've been supplementing with the ABeka 3rd and 4th grade history texts. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the BJU text is a better, more detailed book. In the ABeka third grade book, the Revolutionary War gets the equivalent of two paragraphs. The depth of coverage is this: English army, rich. American army, poor. The Americans needed help. France helped. The Americans won the war. Meanwhile, Louisa May Alcott gets seven pages, including a story about the time she slipped and fell into the frog pond as a girl. (?!) The 4th grade text is a bit better, but not dramatically so. I think I'll be trying the BJU for my next social studies curriculum purchase.

Thanks for the insight. We've moved on from BJU as my girls have gotten older, but I'm not ruling out using it again when my son is in elementary.

Thanks for the video! I really like your perspective on curriculum, and especially how you try to pick curriculum that your kids can do independently. How do you feel ACE compares to Lifepac? I’m torn between LA and Bible on those two for my student.
@brookelynette3
@brookelynette3 3 ай бұрын
Lifepac seems more modern vs ACEs more old-fashioned style. The grading seems easier with ACE. Although I thought ACE would seem boring, my oldest complained that Lifepac was boring and likes ACE more. As far as the content for these subjects I think they're very alike. I like that ACE uses KJV and has a different Bible verse to learn with each pace.

It's taking longer than expected because it's so much information at one time. The experiments and activities are explained very well, and my daughter has no problem with those, but she's struggling with the tests because she can't remember all the information. I had her slow down and take extra time to write out the bold vocabulary words as she comes across them in reading to see if that helps her to retain the information. For the price, I believe it's a very good course and good quality books. I just believe it's going to take longer than the average 180 days for us this year.

@brookelynette3
@brookelynette3 4 ай бұрын
She really enjoyed it. It kept her attention and didn't get boring for her. BJU is not as much the independent style that we like, but still a good curriculum and I would use it again. We only switched to a different curriculum for 4th grade because we had the books leftover from my older daughter's Notgrass 50 States course.

Love it! Keep it simple! Kiddos aren't going to remember the things they got as much as they remember the memories you made with them. There's a much greater reason for Easter than candy and gift giving. That's truly what I like to focus on. When my kids and grandkids look back, I'd rather they remember I taught them about the crucifixion of Jesus and the why behind it than remembering the baskets stuffed full of "stuff"
