A late ol friend of mine (ex green badger), worked one of these over the Lickey on one engine, not long before he retired from Laira. (49 years on the SR, WR & Virgin.) He had lost an engine shortly before the climb & should have stopped for assistance, but was going on well & as he used to say with a smile; “ Rules are meant to be bent, not broken.” Lol. Went over the top at around 23 mph & was on time at New St & knowing him he would have stopped on a rising brake, (mister so as not to spill the tea.)😂

The crossing was at Rugby Cement (Cemex) on the Old Parkfield Rd before The Western Relief Rd was constructed in early 2000's, by at least 2008 the crossing had disappeared.

I don’t think it’s warbling. It’s probably just the audio quality that gives off that impression, as this was recorded on a much older camera.

East Coast and Midland HST drivers had the advantage of being diagrammed also to work higher-performance traction, eg 91s and 222s, so it's only natural I suppose that they aimed for sparkling HST acceleration to close the gap a bit especially when making up lost time! Sadly, same couldn't be said for the GWML where FGW had a small fleet of 180s which only a minority of HST drivers also worked.

They could have skipped installing the diesel engine completely and used the turbo as a gas turbine based on the sound alone.

VERY NICE! Its weird for me to see this crossing with not much vegetation on the other side. Also the wigwags looked pretty new. Also can't believe that the alarm on the other side has survived for probably about 25 years at this point.

How could they couple them? Would it be pushing by the emergency towbar? Could they connect the brake pipes? I'm only amazed that it didn't shut down through overheating (maybe that's what happened to the one in front)

To this day I think GNER had the best looking livery of the all the operators on the ECML. Probably the second greatest in my opinion above the flying Original 125 livery and the just below the Intercity Swallow.
