So just for info. The reason all Peugeots had to retire that year were the connecting rods. They have used Titanium connecting rods for the first time that year. Apparently some ex-Mecachrome engineers that joined Peugeot around that time, made a suggestion to use Titanium connecting rods because they had made some good experiences with Titanium conrods. For instance they used them for Formula 1 engines. The problem is though Titanium has a tendency to "Creep". That's an odd phenomenon especially known with light metals. Aluminium and Magnesium show this effect also. Creeping is a deformation of the material by mechanical stresses far lower than the actual yield strength. It happens faster with elevated temperatures. Elevated in this case means 100°C is already enough to accelerate the process severly. Now, what happend in the engine is simply that the conrods elongated to the point that the piston started to the hit the cylinder head. In F1 for instance the elongation was never a huge issue because the engine were taken appart after just a few hours of running and the conrods were changed. At the 24 hours of LeMans on the other hand...

Audi R15. The most forgettable of all the forgettable Audis to dominate Le Mans. Only the R18 of 2011 and the original R8R of 1999 could be considered good looking cars (maybe the R8 in the GULF colours of Johansen's team). Some of the hybrids they sent to Le Mans in the last years before they pulled out were hideously ugly.

At least Loic Duval won the Super GT championship with Honda's then-new HSV-010 the same year this fire happened. He would also go on to win overall with Audi in 2013, alongside Kristensen and McNish.
