Xbox is the problem

Pushing micro transactions and political/social injustice narratives on people are game killers. I’m not playing games to learn about current “social injustices”…I play to escape reality and to have fun….drop that from the games and I will no longer need to play older titles.

Well, my newest system is an Xbox 360.

Easy to go "back in my day" but I can look at games from 20-40yrs ago and find something of interest. I may even walk away going "Wow that was great". I genuinely don't remember the last AAA game I bought, and it all comes down to boredom from what I see. Mechanics I don't care for. Characters that annoy me. Just makes me dig deeper into libraries of the past.

Today companies build their games as money making machines first and foremost while fun factor and creativity either get sidelined or ignored completely. But the emulators of the games you are playing do not belong to the current era. If anything, you are making a case that the 90s and 2000s were the golden era because of the emulators. I think an era is defined by what an industry is producing currently. But I get your point about how games are accessible now, and I can see why that makes it golden. I think we are slowly entering the golden age, rather than living in it. Because more people are staring to call out malpractices like micro-transactions, injecting politics and the Indies surpassing AAA in popularity. If things go like this, then the next decade would be the golden era.

Since january this year i bought and OG xbox and xbox 360…ive also been buying mostly retro games and i can say this right now the games back then are supremely better made than games now…the graphics might not be as great but damn can you tell theres a night and day difference between games in the hayday and now…no paid dlc, no in-game purchases, gambling, just a complete finished game from start to finish

It's worth noting what a lot of the most-played games are. Based on a Kotaku article released early this year, the most popular games being played nowadays are not the PS2 era classics and earlier - it's games like Fortnite, Roblox, Minecraft, GTAV, Rocket League, CSGO, and so on. Many of these include or exemplify a lot of the typical live service practices that other commenters are citing as why the older games are more popular. The reason "everyone is playing old games" is at least in part because they were the "forever games" that got in the door first. Players are committed to those games, and more importantly, they're consistently getting new content to play with or buy in that game. They have reasons to keep coming back, and new games are not only competing against stuff released at the same time, they're also directly competing with games like Fortnite that have been running for a long time with no signs of stopping anytime soon.

I've realized that entire game genres have basically disappeared lately. I miss how unique those PS2/Xbox game libraries were. Gaming shouldn't hyper focus on graphics, ray tracing & 4k resolutions. What matters more to me is stuff like physics effects, rag doll effects, using creative art styles, having different gameplay modes, satisfying gameplay mechanics, damage effects and interactive environments. Single player modes and offline modes. Current games focus way too much on graphical nitpicking that they don't realize they are making a terrible game. It's like they've forgotten players enjoy aspects that make games fun? Low poly graphics can work too, if they understand what they're doing. I seriously don't know why gaming had to fall into this rut that we are now in..? Also: {We have seen that even if companies delay games, it isn't improving the quality of games being released. Which is a sign there is a MUCH DEEPER issue going on with modern games. No excuses, devs used to make great games with much less and they would have given anything to have certain capabilities to utilize that are available today. It just takes actual passion, focus & talent to make great games. Sidenote: It's so crazy how many people are still supporting super mega rich companies putting out unacceptable products.. i don't understand certain people. I don't understand how certain companies can be messing up so badly. It's frustrating that other passionate people are not allowed to make a version of a type of game that we used to have but no longer get anymore.. Yet these huge companies get full control over if an unused game IP gets made & they do everything they can so no other versions of a game idea will ever come out. Even if there's a huge fan base around certain ideas and there's a ton of passionate devs out there dying to make a version of a certain video game idea.. that frustrates me beyond belief}

I think it's something that people generally mistake. It's never been a better time to be a gamer despite it not being the best time for new games. With that said I find people who have issues with "modern gaming" tend to ristrict themselves to new AAA games & ignore indie games or smaller A or AA games like A Plague Tale, Sifu & Pepper Grinder which are all great smaller titles.

I bought my Series X for the same reason most people bought the One X. There isnt really anything I'm particularly excited about in XBoxs near future, I just needed a console to play my existing library better/faster.

Ironically, Steam released IMO one of the greatest consoles we had in a while that is the Steam Deck, in this generation that was supposed to be dominated by the PS5 and XBox. For this reason, it has become my favourite generation because the lack of variety on console games introduced me to PC games.

So far there are 669 games the Ps5 can play that the Ps4 can not . 155 Ps4 games have the 4k/60fps patch for the Ps5. Not bad for $500 . Most all new games play on PC, S-X and Ps5. But a $500 PC can not play these new games like a $500 console can .

I got my first game system, the Atari 2600 in 1985, so a few years later when I got the NES the leap in graphics was mind blowing. Going from Genesis to PS1 and all the way to the 360 the advancements impressed me. Now consoles are just budget PCs with a limited game library. Graphics have plateaued and we’ve kinda got over the uncanny valley in realism, but it takes an army of developers years to make a game that takes full use of the hardware. I don’t see the point anymore. In 2020 I gave up on consoles all together. If consoles are becoming x64 computers and I already have a computer that games and does other stuff then it comes down to exclusives and that leaves Nintendo as the only real console manufacturer left. Damn this feels depressing.
