All this has now finally (30 years on) been pulled down to make way for Rosewood Hotels to build some Villas in place of the hotel (I would imagine they will be much more resilient to the adverse weather there) I wanted them to built a hotel but sadly not

My wife and I were married there in late July 95; it was simple but so beautiful and the staff were so lovely; the lady for the shop was one of our bridesmaids and a waiter my best man! We spent a magical 3 weeks there and met so many grest new friends from all over the world; almost 30 years later, it is the best place we have ever visited,.and i can't believe it will ever be beaten in our eyes. We were lucky, just a few days later Hurricane Erin came in and took the hotel,. although I understand no one was hurt there. Whilst the footage is a little disturbing, I'm glad this most fabulous of locations has not been spoilt, like much else of Antigua. Thank you Half Moon Bay Hotel, your memories will be with us forever 💝

We also spent our honeymoon there in 1985. Lots of fond memories, so peaceful and serene. Breakfast on our balcony every morning, and sightseeing with Clarence our driver. Need to get back to Antigua…

Loved this hotel and the beach. Attended 4 or 5 times so it is very special to me. Sad to see the damage. Beautiful site and beach as well.

Hi Stephen - My name is Susan L. George. I lived in Antigua from 1971 - 1976. In the early 70's my father was one of four partners in this beautiful hotel. He was instrumental, among others, at building the new wing. Passionate about Tennis, my father added multiple tennis courts. I played on Half Moon Beach with my brother, knowing the calm side was to the left (facing Green Island), middle was more active and right side somewhere in between. I know all of the hotel pathways you went down, and how they smelled as a child, full of clean laundry and salt breeze as the lovely Antiguans made their rounds. These are my most cherished memories. That and our lovely, amazing Caregiver Georgette Warner from Freetown. Thank you for sharing. Susan L. George

Do you know if there’s anything left of the WW2 rifle range?
@swoodhall2 жыл бұрын
Hi Matt,. Thanks for watching and commenting. You can see the shape of the rifle range very clearly. There was a bunker there , a entrance to it on its roof was still visible in the 80s but, all that remains now is a few bricks and a rough sqaure-ish mound.

@@swoodhall Hello mate, appreciate the reply. I live in Aylesbury and want to go take a look could you give me any advice how to find it? I don’t really know where it is yet , anywhere near chequers?
@swoodhall2 жыл бұрын
@@mattsmith3118 Hiya man,. Sure dude it's very easy to find. You should drive towards Princes Risborough and Turn up towards the plough at cadsdean pub, pass the pub and head up the hill.. there is a layby parking place on the left, can't miss it. Park there and head down hill down a track.. after a while u get the grangelands on your left and a bit further turn right into a path that leads to the rifle range. Walk along the path and eventually on your right you can see the huge up hill wide rifle range.. straight a head of you (just left of the path is a odd square is mound as the path begins to go up hill. This is the remains of the bunker. I remember it in the 80s , a square like trapdoor on top of it, filled in with cement. There are a few bricks left visible on top. And a few rabbit holes on the side that seem to go inside.

Road tax is not an issue. Insurance, proof of competence and identifying plates are what cyclists need. Without these, they treat the roads like a playground with little regard for other road users. Regardless of the highway code rules on hierarchy, a lorry will crush a bicyclist like bug. Don't rely on words to avoid death or injury. Cyclists should consider common sense as an option.

I knew this area SO well 20 years ago. Used to spend hours walking my dog. One time I saw a flamingo on the mud just east of here. According to the lady in the pub (now long closed) the odd one used to escape from a private collection over the river. I used to roam about on my motorbike too. Great times. Thanks for the memories.

I visited this beautiful resort about 5 years before the hurricane hit… it beaks my heart to see how such a magical resort was, reduced to this state, because of political corruption…. I stayed in one of the ground floor rooms, with an ocean view, across manicured green lawns, with an uninterrupted view of the ocean… i recall that there were humming birds, who used to visit the plants on the patio…. Every morning, really lovely women, would bring breakfast on huge platter’s balanced on their heads, to our apartment…. I remember making friends with the maids to our apartment, as the majority, of these lovely women, came from the Dominican Republic, and were working in Antiqua, to provide for their children and family back home…. We had an all inclusive package including meals and drinks, over Christmas, so dining in the restaurant, overlooking the ocean was amazing. What I do remember, to this day Is the smell of the table candles, the sugar ants, walking up onto the table, and the salt containers with rice grains in them, which I had never seen before…we hired a jeep, to explore the island, and used to pick up the locals on the road… and they used to tell us their story of living on the island. Spending Christmas, in Antiqua, was so different, , as on Christmas Eve, instead of being a frantic buying of presents and food in supermarkets, as in in the UK, it was always just so chilled out…I remember visiting one of the local towns, all the supermarkets were empty, and I remember a guy walking down the high street, with a roll of carpet, on his shoulder….I look back to this wonderful, fascinating time spent in Antigua, as a privilege to have been able to spent the time there. I remember leading a Congo, around the pool…whilst the local band sung Bob Marley songs…and drinking wonderful Pina colada’s every evening, at the pool bar…looking at this video, the two giant coconut trees to the seaward part of the swimming pool, were destroyed in the hurricane:-(. Thank you for posting this video, although it breaks my heart to see this amazing hotel wrecked - it has sparked so many memories of the wonderful time which I spent there :-)

And then there was a fire, accidently on purpose. Most good for roasting wieners. However Seeing several Dutch barges and a several narrow boats that could be reserected at about half the cost what today's N.B.'s are going for, if I was a bit younger, I would be prowling and selecting the best of the lot. The parts supply would be fantastic.
