I have only found success with Blumlein in the recording studio. I find no use at all for ORTF. The suggested similarity to our ears simply does not exist in the real world, likely because our ears are not simple cardioids. MS has yielded the most exquisite stereo recordings in virtually every circumstance I’ve used them, hundreds of recordings. From orchestra to very close applications like hand drums, percussion table and solo instruments. MS is the only stereophony that competes with my Calrec Soundfield. The fact I continue to use MS even while owning the soundfield says it all to me.

Very informative and entertaining video! I've tried all sorts of ways to help hear pitch while recording. Strangely, one that seemed to work well was turning monitoring off but keeping the headphones on, only listening to the track. I can feel my mask resonance vibrate against the instrumental. Weird little trick that I'll use from time to time if I get stuck.

Great overview! You've started to connect my rudimentary electronics understanding with my rudimentary musical ability! I have one question about the "concept" of impedance and would appreciate understanding it with respect to a guitar. Given the "flow of water" analogy to electricity, I understand impedance to represent the "resistance" that the flow encounters (IE: water is trying to flow down the stream but it keeps meeting rocks or some sort of alter current that pushes back). If this is the case, given a guitar and a preamp, can you elaborate more on why the preamp needs to have 10x more impedance than the source? Naively speaking, my brain hears "the guitar has the ability to push through X resistance ... so we need to plug it into something that has 10x that resistance!" That makes me think "I can lift 100lbs, so, please put 10,000lbs on the barbells"? It seems like nothing should happen at this point bcs I can't budge 10,000lbs. I know I'm wrong but I'm trying to clear up my analogy flaw. Otherwise, I simply go with the rule of thumb and hope that this mis-understanding doesn't come back to bite me in some other way.

Thanks for watching! The weights analogy doesn't quite hold up in this instance. When you connect two devices together, you are basically connecting them in parallel. So take two resistors as an example. If you have a 10-ohm resistor that is drawing 1-amp of current, then you connect another 10-ohm resistor in parallel, it now is also drawing 1-amp, making the total draw of current 2-amps, effectively cutting the total resistance in half. Now, if you connect another resistor in parallel, this one with a resistance of 10,000 ohms, it only draws .001 amps, so it is effectively "invisible", in that it has very little effect on the total circuit. That's what we're trying to do by having an input z that is 10x higher than the output z driving it. By having the input z adequately high, it becomes invisible to the output device so it doesn't load it down. To put it in other terms, if the input z isn't high enough, the input device thinks that the input is it's own output, and causes a drop in signal and other issues as well. Hope that helps!

I would never do an M/S arrangement with 2 large-diaphragm microphones as shown in this video. This "orangutan-like" arrangement would spoil each other's directional characteristics. Much better results can be achieved with 2 small-diaphragm types.

Hello, I purchased a used TLM 49 without a shock mount. What shock mount can I get other than the EA 3? I can't seem to find those anywhere.

It looks like you need the EA 1. Sweetwater Sound has those in stock.
@MrBinthestudio
@MrBinthestudio 5 ай бұрын
Now, if you're looking for something that costs less than the EA 1, it's going to be tricky considering the diameter of the TLM 49. The AKG H85 shock mount just barely fits a TLM103, but the 49 is just a bit too big. BUT, you could make the H85 work if you inserted the mic through the bottom of the shock mount, and just let it hang upside down.

I have an impression that the ORTF piano sample has a strange sound defect at E of the second octave (in the last arpeggio). Something like a resonance. Is it a side effect of the ortf technique, a glitch of the piano or a glitch of my ears? I hear it both in stereo and mono.

If I want to record everyday, travel, walk tour, KZfaq that talk from behind the camera and at some distance, I want to step into record elements for game and vocal and instruments for music too, after some research, I come to this 4 setups, Sennheiser MKE 440, MKE 600, Line Audio CW4 and Deity HD-TX, the video will be record using Panasonic HC-X1500 camcorder, is this good minimal run and gun setup that deal with untreated room too? When to record in stereo and mono in my cases, music instruments and vocal all in stereo or each in mono, how about surround sound, do I need omnidirectional mic to create surround sound, or can just make a binaural setup to cover everything? Some say stereo mic not good for vocal, true? Shouldn't walk tour be surround sound, why people use directional mic for that? One KZfaqr say pencil condenser cover wider field by not cancel the sides like shotgun mic, is this mean I can use just one pencil condenser to cover all the above stereo and mono needs? Should I get both or one between MKE 600 and CW4? Does the MKE 440 stereo good enough/better and I don't need two CW4? Can the CW4 catch same/further distance voice/sound compare to MKE 600? Do I need the shotgun mic or CW4 will do to record outdoor sound for game elements? How do I record my behind the camera voice if I use the MKE 440 stereo mic facing Front when walking, attach CW4 to HD-TX facing rear or 1 CW4 front 1 CW4 back? Can I use one of the MKE 440 stereo mics as mono shotgun mic? The camcorder has an option handle with 2 XLR inputs, do I need it, can I use it as music elements recorder? Do I need 32 bits? If I just want a small XLR recorder and not going to use the wireless transmission, is HD-TX worth it? Is it suitable to just attach a pencil condenser CW4 mic to it to record singing vocal and instruments that way and a MKE 600 shotgun mic to it to record elements and sound effects for game development? Can I record both the XLR and 3.5mm jack at same time in same and different tracks? Can I use it as a high res music player so I don't need to buy another dedicated music device which function just like an audio recorder that can't record high res audio but better at organisation to play music? Any other recorder recommendations?

I tried this last night. Previously I was using a 25 foot cable and then 3 additional 18 foot cables in my wet-dry guitar rig (including effects loop and to the second amplifier). It sounded very good. But then I replaced all those lengthy cables with 6 foot cables for my pedals and a 12 foot cable for my guitar. Boom! Immediately I had more high end frequency responses. This not only improved my tone, it also gave me greater flexibility to use more different settings effectively on my amp and guitar. Thanks!!!

Only part of this is correct. Since the guitar pickup is a coil and the cable is a capacitor you have a second order low pass with a resonance peak at a certain frequency, as long as the volume control is full on, so it will not dampen the alternating charging between coil and cable. This resonance peak is more pronounced the lower resistance a pickup will have. you can tame a shrill strat or Tele with a longer cable, not only reducing treble, but also shifting down the resonance peak. This resonance peak is much of the character of the sound of a guitar. A too short cable will shift the resonance up high and kill a lot of the character...ice pick sounds come to mind. Many old school blues players used this trick btw. playing through a super reverb with a Tele with a long cable and sounding fat...

200 feet = 6o metres. That's extreme. In practical situations of up to 20 metres it isn't anything that an amplifier's presence control or eq can't address..

Keyboards don't have the high impedance outputs like guitars, so you can get away with a much longer cable before you have any noticeable high frequency loss

"Have you ever asked a guitar player to turn down the bass on their amp?" LOL Actually, I did have a problem doing mixing for a live Christmas concert. At practice about a week or two before the event, there was too much muddy bass & nothing I could do about it as the bass amp was out of my control. I had a think about this, and decided to try putting the bass amp up on a stand to decouple it from the stage floor which was at about audience head height, spilling excess low end boundary reinforcement directly at the audience. Well I tactfully explained that there was a problem that would not be apparent to anyone on stage, but was bad for the audience. So, I built a heavy MDF butterfly stand that lifted the amp and angled it upwards some to decouple it from the stage floor. Stand hinge was a webbing strap, added cork feet and lined the amp seat with more cork. Absolutely no vibrations & it killed the problem stone dead. The Bass player was very happy with his tone & so was the audience. It was one of those rare wins on the 1st guess. In fact I think it was possibly the best concert with the tightest bass line I have ever mixed. I came home from that one stoked & with absolutely no regrets.
