Really good presentation. Is this some sort of ‘what if’ scenario? What is Kurt Meyer and a 12SS unit doing near Juno on the morning of 6th June?

What I recall from reading La Bataille's Preussich-Eylau historical notes was that Murat's charge would not have taken place if it were not for Augereau's corps stumbling into the Russian front line during a snow storm. The Russians let loose with everything they had and sent the French reeling back. The Russians then advanced upon Napoleon's position and he called upon Murat to stop them. He even sent his personal guard, the Mamelukes, showing how desperate the situation became. Murat was at his best in this situation, and charged through the Russian lines, then back through them after reforming. Saved the day for the French.

Man, I disagree totally. I think Warriors of Middle Earth needlessly bloats the game. Lords is necessary, IMO, given the subtle ways it smoothes some of the edges in the rules. Kings is not necessary IMO, but I like it from a thematic perspective.

Oh wow, I love Warriors! It really encourages me to rush Strider south, and, since we introduced it, the Companions have played a far more active role in regions like Fangorn, Helms Deep, and the Woodland Realm. It's added that extra 'flavour' that you see in the books, that often didn't reflect in our games.

@@WiseGuyHistory I can see that. I just think the whole “add a figure/remove a figure” for effects and combat is really clunky. Plus all the new unit cards make the game take up even more space on the table. I like the cleanliness and unobtrusiveness of the original cards from the base game for those same effects.

Fantastic! Very informative and helpful. Thank you! (liked and subbed!) One question ... It seems like if the Shadow player is using hunt tiles on the sovereign board that this would detract from the more important goal of corrupting Frodo. What are your thoughts and experiences regarding this aspect of the Kings expansion?
@WiseGuyHistory

@jnharr Yeah they have a choice of what tile to use, so in effect they can weed out weak tiles, or go strong to corrupt the Sovereigns...

Dreaming for the next expansion... I would love to see a Hobbiton Expansion. I am experimenting with a quick simple home variation with the hobbits in Hobbiton and each space they move toward Rivendale each player gets to place an extra army unit anywhere and they pick up Strider in Bree. Also experimenting with giving Gray Haven Elves the ability to travel by sea several spaces and open up some options for them. But a real expansion could explore a lot: Black riders attacking, connect with Strider at Bree, Heal up with Tom Bombadil but risk damage at Old Tree Willow, Barrow Whights, or Weathertop, Add Glorfindel, Ford of the Bruinen River, while having to move each of the Fellowship from their respective lands to Rivendale in time. Could also add physical hit points for main characters or extend the corruption track so that when they reach Rivendale they might be better or worse off... but keep my option that allows players to add units anywhere so that when the Fellowship is in Rivendale the battle landscape can be a bit different each time.

Thank you for the video! War of the Ring (2nd Edition) is the EPIC game in my collection. I have LORDS and WARRIORS but did not know KINGS was out until recently so this was helpful! It is good to see Ares is still investing in this great version! I will be looking to get KINGS soon. I am hoping one day there will be a Hobbiton expansion which involves the start of the journey from Hobbiton to Rivendale and the Scouring.

I have all 3 expansions but we tend to play the base game on its own and we haven't yet played the KoME expansion. Does playing all 3 expansions add to the time to play the game? Further, does it move the needle of either side achieving victory towards one of the ways to win; dunk or military (free) and military and corruption (shadow) (so, for example, if corruption tokens are put on the character board, does that mean it will affect the ring dunk since whichever corruption token is placed is no longer in the bag)?

Vassal is really a fantastic tool, especially for finding an opponent online - since that can always be a bit of a challenge for some of the more complicated wargames. For some reason, I still want to play the hex and counter games old school with physical board and units. Even though I have played a number of Vassal games and agree Vassal is far easier to use in so many ways, and is less time consuming - there is just something about the physical board being right there with the units. Maybe it's a "boomer generation" thing. Luckily, I have enough space to keep a game sitting for awhile - even for months if need be. Great point on the rules. Very discouraging to get into a game if rules are a mess.

Another top video. I do think that while area movement isn't particularly popular and has a bit of a bad rep in wargame circles. It is perhaps the best way of capturing modern (WW1 and post) tactical battles. Looking at the Russo-Ukrainian war for instance, it is being fought block by block, hedgerow by hedgerow, entrenched strongpoint by entrenched strongpoint, which splitting terrain down into 'areas' works well to simulate. Hex and counter to me does work better for more linear warfare showing how a formation might say turn a flank on an open battlefield.

My old wargaming friend and I, we are both retired, have found a fabulous venue that meets the last Sunday of every month. Its a stereotypical English church and it hosts a family boardgame afternoon actually in the church not the church hall. We have both been made very welcome by the vicar and the other gamers. Typically I see modern Euro family games on the table and our games always create interest. We get the big guns out ! Squad Leader,, Victory in the Pacific,, Airforce and other old AH and SPI titles,,, Next on the table is Victory Games 5th Fleet. It is surprising how many people have not seen an hex and counter game up close. I am always aware of where we are and the sensitivities of the parishoners, so Blood Feud in New York stays at home. And when we played Seelowe I did not take the box, the graphics are from a different age.

I adore this game, primarily for the things you highlighted. The game is huge, and you have so many levers you can pull. However, the game is mechanically simple… follow the flowcharts, roll dice with modifiers. That’s it. It’s not too hard to focus on a particular problem, and look how to resolve it. My favorite aspect is that even if you’re not sure what to do, you can role play your way through. The game provides the means to do exactly what you would think needs to be done as if it was the real world.

hey quick tip about using vassal you can shift and ctrl (separate actions) click in the select specific peace menu and you can select multiple cards at once like you would files on a windows computer very useful when playing games like Arkham horror. also you can put cards on the bottom of decks by reversing the deck putting the card in question in the deck then reversing the deck again
@WiseGuyHistory

I know about the shift/ctrl ability, but what do you mean by 'reversing the deck', how do you 'reverse a deck'?
@bradenatkinson4784
@bradenatkinson4784 22 күн бұрын
@@WiseGuyHistory it is an option that appears when you right click on decks that have it activated (when making a module or extension) and it reverses the order of the cards so the bottom card becomes the top card and so on. It’s good since it doesn’t reveal what the cards are
@WiseGuyHistory
@WiseGuyHistory 22 күн бұрын
Ah nice! I think in the case of Mr President, the deck has been setup to always 'draw random', so it doesn't matter what is technically 'on top', it'll always draw a random card.

I'm REALLY loving this system for all of the reasons Uwe describes. And he was kind enough to forward me the v1.4 rules as they exist so far. The orders system (which also adds up to both sides initiative number depending on which orders they give), cubes for activation, fatigue and general flow of the game with all the activation choices the system does give you is fascinating so far! I really like the streamlined combat charts and still there is plenty of dice rolling but it does make for a really nice back and forth flow to the game. I'm getting a bit obsessed with it and can't wait to get it on the table with my wargame buddy. Very much looking forward to the next addition already. Thanks for this gem Uwe!

Hello Michael, thank you very much for your very kind words. As it may not have been easy to understand during the interview, please allow me to briefly describe the design philosophy: a rule that requires one or more exceptions is probably not a good rule and is hard to learn (and remember). I prefer to combine three easy-to-learn (and remember) mechanisms to present the player with complex decision making. Apart from the fact that each rule should only appear once in the rulebook, each rule must have an impact on the game that justifies its existence. This applies to both the technical aspects of the game and the historical aspects. Thanks to a lot of feedback, my approach of "keeping each rule short, simple and as precise as possible" (KISS-P) has proven to be less than satisfactory. Hence the "living rules", because we needed clarifications here and there. Personally, I really like the simple command system and the army fatigue rule. In recent years, I've grown less and less fond of all-powerful decision making and perfectly coordinated movement of entire armies. I have written relatively detailed designer notes to show how I interpret which aspects of a Napoleonic battle. I also hope that the level of detail reflects the character of a Napoleonic battle. Certainly there would have been the possibility to include skirmishers, ammunition for the artillery, different formations and reaction options for the cavalry, but there is already another, beautiful series: La Bataille :-). I decided to focus on the essential battle formations and rather expand the system to include the aspect of "orders" and army fatigue. On a covention I had a wonderful encounter during the Great Battle scenario. Davout rolls up the left wing of the Russian army, the player complains about the lack of reaction options and the effectiveness of the French army and says the system is broken. I asked him what orders his formations have in this sector. He says "hold". I then asked him what he expects when he gives his formations the order to hold the position? A counterattack? It is not the game system that is broken, but the player has given his formations disastrous orders :-). Anticipating your opponent's plans (orders) and possibly launching an unexpected counterattack or retreat on a segment of the battlefield is a lot of fun.
@michaelboyd38
@michaelboyd38 22 күн бұрын
I completely understand what you are saying about trying to couch the rule language in as precise a form as possible. I honestly don't mind having "living" evolving rules as a way for you to refine the system as it's played by wargamers now and not just your testers. We live in the modern world and it's not a big deal to download and print revised rules at all. What I truly LOVE about this system is the orders and the very realistic representation of how hard it was to coordinate such armies at that time. Your description of the gamer that wanted to blame the system instead of his orders is entirely apropos! I was completely blown away by your other description of adding a cube to designate a thunderstorm, or periods of fog (Austerlitz!) or snow showers, or wafting clouds of smoke, etc.! Just brilliant and it can actually be sporadic because of the cube pull mechanism!! Like I said, I'm really becoming obsessed with your system. I do appreciate the streamlined combat charts and abstraction of morale being built into the SP number, formations, skirmishers, etc. It all just really works for me without becoming to cluttered and bogged down and it does give the game it's own flow, especially with the cube pulls. Again, I really think you've created quite the wargame gem here!
